Upgrading Motherboard

Hey Friends,

I was wondering When you upgrade a motherboard

to something better do you have to reinstall windows?

(This is aimed at Intel Sky-lake boards)

Many Thanks Guys,

Nick

Not at all, you only need to reinstall Windows if you're upgrading your system storage in a way that will affect the C: drive.

Not necessarily. You will sometimes need to reinstall windows when installing a new motherboard.

you dont have to re-install

but its recommended you do to remove those old drivers for your previous motherboard as they might cause issues and conflict with your newer ones :D

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

I've never come across any kind of problem like this before in the last 10 years.

Updating drivers, yeah, but otherwise it's exactly the same as changing a graphics card or something.

If your using an OEM version of windows you might have to re install windows when you upgrade your hardware.

If you don't please keep a backup of your data as the not everything works in the ideal way.

If you have an OEM licence, the Windows Product Key is tied to the motherboard.

You could call up Microsoft can say....you had to replace the motherboard because it died...when you really just upgraded but...

This is even more true with Widows 10, where the information is no longer stored on your system, but into the Microsoft database servers.

I recently changed Mobos on a Windows 10 system, and did not need to re-install Windows, but it did prompt me to verify the license (full version) - they have an easy smart phone app for the process.  Not sure if it would have been allowed with an OEM version though.
