I'd say it would last a good 3 years at the least.

In relation to how long it will last it all depends how you look after it and cooling. If you overclock it run things hot its going to shorten the life span as heat is the biggest killer in components. I wouldn't say 78C isn't bad but I would have thought it would have been better. Is it a reference model or MSi own cooling on it???

A 980ti is way overkill for gaming at 1080p 60fps and for gaming at that res, the temp seems a bit high.

On what info are you basing this? Whilst I sort of agree, the OP is asking how long it will roughly last for playing at this res, and I would agree that 2 - 3 years is about correct.

I'm basing this on my sig system with 2x 970 GTX which is > 980ti, I'm running these at 1440P and I can already tell in some titles that I will need to swap them out some time in the next year

as for the temps, it depends on ambients and and PC case cooling

It's the Gaming 6G. But I know I can get it a lot cooler because I don't have good airflow in my micro atx case. I was asking if the temp is okay because I don't really want to do anything about it cause the card is still dead quiet at that temp. I can tell I have bad airflow because when I take my side panel off and stick my hand in all the air around it is hot so the air most build up and increase the temps.

Its in the 70's so to me that would seem ok. Its not great but its not bad either. If you can do anything about airflow in the case I would look at that first maybe some static pressure high performance fans. Could be worth looking in that.

Yeah I might buy some noctuas because I just have some 1200rpm case fans, they're quiet but don't move much air. Or I might just buy a full atx case like the s340 for more space for the graphics card to suck air.

If a new case is an option for you I would go down that route. I know it may cost some more but if you got a bigger case and some good case fans you will be laughing. I reckon your would see your temps drop a little. maybe consider a kracken g10 water cooling for it too. Its meant to be excellent

I might spend my money on other stuff, like right now I only have a i5 4440. But I don't think that an i5 will bottleneck a 980ti too much at 1080p. There also some cool games coming out I want to get.

No I cant see that bottlenecking it at all. It does depends what games you play as some games rely on the cpu a lot and some don't. I have a 6600k and a 980ti and they work amazingly well together

What 980ti do you have?

If I'm honest I would say its medium in sound and if I'm honest it hasn't got very hot and I stressed tested it for like 4 hours the highest its been and this is when I overclocked it even more was 67C. The reference designs are louder as they exhaust the air out instead of recirculating it in the case

How hot and loud does that get then?

Yeah that sounds pretty good. I was honestly pretty impressed on how quiet they are. I came from a 390x which has the same tdp as the 980ti and theoretically you would think it would be about the same as the 390x which was loud and hot. But to my surprise I guess Maxwell just doesn't output that much heat because it even has a smaller cooler than the 390x does.

So something I'm curious about is how long will my 980ti last on 1080p max settings 60fps (just a rough estimate)? Also is 78 degrees hot for an msi 980ti?

will take a while before you have to severely tweak your settings to get a locked 60FPS at 1080p with a 980ti...unless you run shit games...like poorly optimized garbage or something,...but for decent AAA titles...many years probably...it's vastly overkill...i use mine at 1440p and have absolutely no problem getting 80FPS+ at that resolution (77.7% more pixels than 1080p) and i don't even have to tweak the settings...i run everything maxed out. (except anti-aliasing sometimes, obviously)
