I'm hoping to build a super budget NAS and I'm wondering if I can pick up a switch instead of splashing out on a multiple port network card. Is it possible to do this?

They have two different uses and will effect the speeds going to and from the NAS. The switch will allow networking, the card just allows the PC to connect to two networks essentially.

What is your budget and uses?

If you are planning on being able to access it on the network than that should work fine.

You want to know if you can use a switch as the NAS's network card? No.

If the mobo for the NAS does not have a NIC build into the mobo (never heard of that), then you will have to use a PCI or PCIe NIC in order to have it interface with the network.

Or am I misunderstanding what you are asking?

Around £250 for the whole thing. I will just use it for mass storage and backups.

I was thinking of connecting my PC to the NAS directly for amazing speeds.

So I'm assuming home use?

You mobo should have 10/100 or 10/100/1000 port built in, you only need 1 for the NAS unless its going to multiple networks.

You need a switch not a card

Cards allow the device to connect to the network, not back and forth between computers. Switches bridge that or special cables. If you buy a gigabyte(10/100/1000) switch you'll have more speed than you could need.

Your bottleneck will always be at the single weakest point. If you are planning to do something like this a quad network cards can be very cheap such ashttp://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Intel-Gigabit-ET1-Quad-Port-Server-Adapter-network-adapter-/291710733794?hash=item43eb508de2:g:8twAAOSw4UtWRQp6

Oh, ok.

Yes, in that case you will want a switch.
