Server VS Consumer mobo

Server noob question:

 

What are the primary differences between a consumer grade motherboard and a server grade motherboard? Is it just that server mother boards are meant to be run 24/7?

(I was going to say "watch the recent video Linus just made about this topic", then I realized that the vídeo doesn't cover it all that much.... thx LMG).

 

Regular consumer mobos have a lot of features that servers would call "BS". Such as lots of USBs, better GPU support, nice audio, OCing, great aesthetics, etc. Server stuff, on the other hand, has a lot of features that regular consumers would call "BS". Such as dual gigabit lan, ECC, multi-CPU support, remote management, etc.

 

Also, both mobos are made to run 24/7. There's no such distinction.

And while there are some differences I would never recommend server grade hardware if someone´s intention is just a dedicated home server. I´m running my home server with a H97 mainboard and i5 4590 24/7 and neither RAM nor other components suffered ever.

 

The real server grade hardware is meant to be used in a professional environment such as companies.
