Another simple question. Is the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 Xtreme Gaming worth paying the extra premium or is there any better option?

Please keep in mind that performance, noise and cooling should be around the same or better.

I am aware of that but don't they run a lot hotter? And I heard that a lot of games only utilize 4-6 GB of the 390X.

just get the EVGA ACX 2.0 :)

or the MSI Twinfrozer V :)

 

or get the R9 390 if you want more perfomance and you are willing to give up the nvidia features like shadowplay and cuda

with a custom fan profile, my 290x is quiet and never goes over 75 degrees.

GTA5 is a massive VRAM hog, especially at higher resolutions.

I don't think I can go without the green features since I use them quite often. But any thought on the GPU I mentioned at the top?

I wouldn't. Personal pick is MSI's 100 Million 970.
