It doesnt speed anything up, Gigabit ethernet just means that gigabit is the fastest internet it will carry.

I think you are confusing things. Inside your home you will have an "intranet speed", which will be your gigabit home network. Then you have a connection from your modem to the outside world, this will be your 10Mbps. So yes if you have multiple computers or a server inside your home, theoretically they can communicate at a 1000mbps but no matter how fast they communicate inside your network, the connection outside of your house will never change. So no a gigabit ethernet is not affected by your 10mbps internet connection.

Does this make sense ?

Dude, considering that my 7 years old desktop achieves gigabit connection on LAN with the integrated ethernet port, buying anything less then a gigabit NIC, you would probably either end up with cheap crap that works 50% of the time or someting that was invented by the dinosaurs themselves.

100 mbit network equipment (not the same as the internet bandwidth) is severly outdated technology. Going with gigabit is almost a norm nowadays, and it doens't cost an arm and a leg either.

So I am getting Ethernet for my PC soon and was wondering whether gigabit still speeds things up if you have a 10 Mbps internet speed?

The main difference for you will be reduced latency and better LAN connectivity. Your Wan connectivity will be the same.
