Replacing my old headset - "Cans" advice

Go to solution Solved by Mogwai,

Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro is selling for a crazy price lately so I'd grab those, but you might want something to drive them louder - that's where a FiiO E10 comes in. Add a Zalman Clip-On for cheapness and you're good to go.

This is probably stretching your budget, but I think it'd be worth it if you could manage.

+1 990's are a great all around headphone for the money, 990's+E10 would be a great combo. Also if you wanted a pair of HD558's like you were contemplating you could most likely get by with on-board.

My rule of thumb comes into play again :), as long as you don't have a pentium 3 motherboard you should be fine. (I'm definitely making some sort of picture for this today) :)

Hey guys, I know there is probably info about this already so if you could point in the right direction that would be great.

Anyway my Gamecom 777 headband finally broke after a good couple years of everyday gaming and after looking around I've decided

that i'm best off getting a good pair of cans and an acceptable separate mic for TS and the likes(maybe snowball, although not neccessary).

I'm an open-ear style guy so I was thinking Sennheiser HD 558 or around that price range. Don't really want to be spending more then that

as I still need to get a mic and possibly a DAC/AMP combo since it is so widely suggested over a sound card for the price.

Any suggestions would be great, thanks in advance for the help guys.

EDIT: forgot to mention I'm running off onboard from my asrock z77 extreme4 which doesn't to be that flash compared to a lot of other onboard solutions on the market, and i'm wanting to up my audio experience

I would recommend the PC360. Great microphone, open and with great quality.

I'm currently using PC350 myself because I like the closed/leatherfeel but I've tried PC360 as well and they are great.

Although recommended, the PC360 does not require a sound card with an headphone amp being only at 50 ohm impedance.

There's also a version with a USB soundcard, 363D.

Astro A40 seems like a great headset too.

There are loads of options when it comes to headphones, but when we're talking about a headset with a great microphone I would go for Sennheiser.

Sure, I'm a bit of a fanboy - but I've used other brands too. SteelSeries products like 7H and Siberia are great, but quality and feel does not measure up.

I recently purchased Corsair Vengeance 1500 but returned them within 3 days. Horrible fit, laughable sound quality, bad microphone (zalman clipon is better).

The only problem with Sennheiser's headsets is you can get their comparable headphones + a separate mic for less. If someone really wants the integrated product, they're a great item though.

I've created a nice meme for this, I'm waiting for the next topic to come along to use it :)

saves me from typing the same redundant 3 or 4 sentences haha.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I think I will be going the 558 and zalman mic route simply to keep the cost down as those 990's are a bit more then I think I could justify. I heard linus may be doing an overview on the fiio e10 soon so I might add that if I feel it neccessary.

Thanks again, awesome community
