Thunderbolt Graphics

I recently saw Linus use thunderbolt to have his pc in another room. I would like to be able to do that but I am wondering something. If I run my graphics over thunderbolt, will it negate my graphics card? Or will it be just as fast as using the native card ports?

In his situation he has an add in card in his computer that takes the displayport out of the back of the gpu then into the thunderbolt card. Which then over thunderbolt carries the displayport signal along with all other sorts of signals.

I assume it uses the GPU with a special thunderbolt card.
