What plug is on these speakers? If it is a "traditional" headphone plug, make sure it is all the way in.

Its basically the power adapter which connects to an outlet, the left speaker jack to connect to the right speaker and a left and right cable (or aux) to connect to the pc.

The pc should detect it when the audio cable is connected to the pc. There is a little switch inside the jack that detects if there is a plug in there. Windows should automatically change the output but have a look in the sound output thing.

Windows says that there are no speakers connected though, they work on my ipod fine via auxiliary. realtek gives me a few options such as line in, headphones and front speaker out but ive tried all of them.

I've had an issue like this regarding Realtek's software. I can't recall and I cannot check right now, however somewhere in the software it will actually let you unbind all audio-inputs as for some reason it treats them as one connection (or something along those lines). It was very odd, but after separating them I managed to get my friends system up and going. The funny thing here is I'm pretty sure he has the same motherboard as you too, but that was quite a while ago.
