is there a plain jane motherboard database out on the web someplace (here would be great), that clearly lists all the specs and features of  the 500 or so motherboards on the market? one that does not have a bunch of advertising or bling that just adds to the already confusing task of finding the right board?

The best thing I can think of is PCpartpicker, you can filter by some features there.

I doubt it - look how many stores have:

  • All the specs
  • The correct specs
  • The right spec in the right field
  • etc

for every product (or any product even) in their store.  It's none, or close to it if you didn't know :P  Obviously this precludes the possibility of something like this existing, unless someone took the time to do themselves what no one else would and properly research and type in all the correct specs for ever board properly.

There's aren't really that many though.  You should be able to considerably narrow it down by chipset (Z170 for example) preferred brand (for whatever reason that may be - warranty, fanboy, etc.) and style/colour.  That should leave you with few enough you can compare in a sane amount of time :)

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.
