I want to make a NAS out of my 3 y/o HP Pavilion withe an AMD A8 and running windows 10. What do I need besides some hdds? And how do I set up a NAS?  (I want to make it wired into my router for best speeds it that a good idea?)

I have an Anet A8 as my project printer and a i3 MK3 for when I want things to work.

I extrude my own filament and haven't saved a penny yet.

FreeNAS is what I am using, couple things I would make sure

1. does the Pavillion have Gb ethernet port, if not buy a NIC maybe one with dual ports?

2. how much RAM does it have FreeNAS min. req. is 8gb (I put 16 in mine)

3. If you have another old pc I personally set up  a pfsense router and got a gigabit switch that will allow you to not eat up anymore ports and give you the option for loadbalancing and failover. (not sure about link aggregation with freenas)

CPUIntel i5-6600k - Mobo - MSI Z170A M3 Gaming - RAM - 16GB G.SKILL DDR4 2133 -  GPU - MSI R9 380 4GB

CASE - Corsair Cube 540  CPU COOLER - Hyper 212 EVO - PSU - EVGA 1050w

Then your fine there.

I personally found FreeNAS to be fairly easy to setup, and tons of options depending on what you want to do complex or simple. Plus it offers Jails( plugins basically but a little different) that allow you to use PLEX which can stream your media content. I cant speak for unRAID i have never used it.
