C2D running EXTREMELY hot

Go to solution Solved by tendstofortytwo,

Changed to E2140. I'm at a much more reasonable 35 degrees now. Thanks to all who replied.

Hey.

I have with me right now a machine with the following specs:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6300

ASUS P5-GCMX (the 1066 MHz one, not the 1333 one)

ZOTAC GeForce 210

3GB DDR2

160GB hard drive, Corsair VS450, random case

I can't help but notice that the CPU always runs very, very hot. I have nothing but four tabs in Google Chrome open right now, and Speccy reports 72-74 degrees Celsius. The GPU is around 55-60 degrees, which I think is okay because the card is passively cooled - no fan, just heatsink.

I've underclocked the CPU to 1.2 GHz right now, but there seems to be no improvement. Help?

PS: I also have a Pentium E2140 as a last resort if this chip doesn't run cool.

I would do a good dusting and thermal paste replacement, as I was using a low-profile heatsink which was about on-par with a C2D's stock heatsink on a Q6600 and it barely passed 67C.

I presume you are running a stock cooler, which for c2d was a piece of crap. Also, the stock thermal compound could have dried up starting to work as insulation rather than dispersing heat.

Replace thermal compound and the problem is no more.

It's a C2D, what do you expect?

Replacing the thermal paste or buying a better coole ris all you can do.

I am on a stock low-profile cooler, but I have cleaned the CPU and replaced the thermal compound with Cooler Master IC Value V1. I realize this may not be the best, but I had it lying around and it worked well on my i5, or at least as good as new stock compound anyway.

I have very recently rebuilt this entire PC from scratch, clearing out all the dust I possibly could.

Buying a cooler isn't currently an option. Since many of you seem to suggest the C2D has had heat problems with the stock cooler, the E2140 should work fine, right?
