Greets, long time watcher and lurker. Made this account to finally ask for some advice.

My current build is maybe starting to show its age. Mostly in the mother board that I have now.

Mobo is MSI-P67??? something. Im not taking my video card out just to look under it to see currently.

The draw backs of it are the single PCIe16 slot and I am looking at moving to M2 storage and it does not have that ability.

I use the PC to play some games, though not many AAA titles. Really depends on what meets my fancy. Killing Floor 2 for the last few weeks. /shrug. With a family it is hard to get time to play much

Currently Processor is an I7-2600

Really nothing wrong with this processor but, if I am looking for a new mobo then it looks like I will need a new processor.

16gb of ram, DDR3, 1333Mhz

240 GB intel something SSD. I from a friend as a Christmas gift in 2014/15.

Currently running a Nvidia 660ti. I will have a 970 as soon as Microcenter can get me one that does not throw memory errors.

EVGA 750 gold PSU, brand new fully modular, will meet pretty much any need.

2, 28 inch 1080p monitors.

My case is kinda meh, for full disclosure. This computer was originally bought for a steal from Tiger direct. I paid $550 brand new for it in 2011. Here is the link.

From my research I can go what seems 2 directions. Both of which I am unsure of. The main reason for my hesitation and asking here is my total un-willingness to OC stuff. Maybe it has gotten easier, but I would just rather not mess with it. That said here is what I've found.

Option 1, .

i7-5820k

Asus x99-a

Some kind of cooler in the $20-110 range.

$750-775

Option 2,

i5-6600k

Gigabyte ga-z170x - Gaming 5

32 gb DDR4

Some kind of cooler in the $20-110 range

$660-700

Let me know what you suggest.

Those processors are in way different classes.

5820k is a 6/12 core and the 6600 is 4/4 core. Both are overclockable but they are quite different.

If you want a more $$ based machine get the 6600k, if you want balls out, get the Haswell-E

What are you using your PC for?

by M.2 did you mean PCI-e? because PCI-e SSDs aren't going to be worth it.

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

I did mention that I wanted to use it for gaming. Though now that I am not half asleep maybe I can make more sense.

Play games, Browse the web, Watch movies (streams and Blue rays) and other things a normal mid 30's person with a family and a 3 year old would do with a PC. I do not have 15 hours a day to play games.

my 2700 is "working" but I am ready to upgrade. I want to upgrade into something that is ready for tomorrow. That is why I want access to m.2  several PCIe ports, usb 3.1 and type c  and what ever else I can as I put the money up.

having more cores would be "cool" but as I did research today at work I am leaning away from those Extreme unlocked choices.

It seems like the bang for the buck is to get a K processor even though I don't ever plan on pushing the clock.

Really wouldn't worry about M.2, it's more a useful thing for laptops

anyways here's a skylake i7 build with a board that has USB 3.1 and Type C

and a 390 is going to be faster overall than a 970
