Archive old photos

I would like to archive or backup my old photos and videos. I am not planning to access them daily, but I plan keeping them for a long time. Is it better to put it on an external drive, separate internal. or burn it to a DVD or BluRay? Currently, I have one copy on my internal drive, and one on external which is not plugged all the time. Could you please tell me what is the best option for it?
