New Gaming Build

Go to solution Solved by leonard_sun,

Hi Mack,

Since the specs you did put out is rather general I've gone and thought about picking out mid-range, more performance centric build.

Here's the link: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/ggwXgs

So here's the deal.

A good friend of mine is looking to upgrade his currently...not optimal...setup for some more intensive gaming.  He's asked me to help him out, and I figured there'd be no better place to get a strong start than here.  Here are the details.  Currently, there is no set budget.  He wants to be able to play games like Fallout 4 and Xcom 2, and be able to run a handful of mods in Fallout 4.  I imagine for the CPU he wouldn't need anything more than an Intel i5 6600K, but I didn't know where to go for the graphics card.  I assumed 16gb of DDR4 RAM would serve him right, but that may be a bit overkill.  PCPartPicker links would be greatly appreciated as I am an avid user of the service, but it's fine if you can't use that.  Let me know if you need me to clarify something.

Thanks!

What resolution is he looking at?

Make sure to quote me or tag me when responding to me, or I might not know you replied! Examples:

And make sure you do it by hitting the quote button at the bottom left of my post, and not the one inside the editor!

Or this:

Buy whatever product is best for you, not what product is "best" for the market.

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

I'd base it around a 6600k and an R9 390, assuming your friend is looking for a fairly high end build, but with some semblance of value for money. I'd agree and say go for 16GB of RAM, it's fairly cheap and not total overkill, so why not?

As for the case, motherboard, PSU etc, there are loads of good choices, so a lot of it is down to personal preference and what's currently a good price in your country/area.

EDIT: I forgot to day, I just got a Define S case, it was a pleasure to transplant my system into, there was clearly a lot of thought went into its design. Not only that, but it's fairly cheap, I got the non-window version (quieter and cheaper) for £65.

much silence, so I am gonna make a few comments, I guess?

I know there's no budget, but is there a cost he would like to stay around, or a cost that is starting to make him uncomfortable?

Does he need a monitor?

Does he have a preferred resolution, or already own a monitor?

Mid-range for the size, and not necessarily future proof.  No budget yet.  I'll look at it and get back to you.  Thanks.

Not sure of anything money related at the moment, yes, I know that's pretty important.

I'm pretty sure he already has a good monitor

Thanks
