My i5 4590 hits 80ºC while playing CS:GO and 93ºC in prime95 (I turned prime95 off when I saw those temps, so I don't know if it would go higher).

At idle it sits around 43-45.

This wasn't happening to me when I first installed the CPU (September 2015, so around 6 months ago). It barely hit 60º while playing CS:GO and it idled around 28-30ºC.

I'm using the stock cooler, which is a little bit dusty but it's really not bad at all. Just a little dust. Could the thermal paste have dried out in 6 months? I used the one that comes pre-installed with the stock cooler.

Thanks

Any dust can make a difference. Clean the dust off, check temps. again. If they´re still bad, try re-applying the thermal paste.

Take the stock cooler off and clean off thermal paste. Apply new paste and run the game again.

My guess is that only 3 of the 4 pegs are clipped into the motherboard. When I installed the new Skylake stock cooler it seemed slightly easier but with my old 4690k it was a bit difficult to get them all snapped in.

When I first installed the CPU I really made sure the cooler was properly clipped in, so I don't think it's that, unless one of the pegs un-clipped itself? O.o I'll check though

It's possible, but if you made absolutely sure then probably not likely. I'd agree with the post above to clean the dust, but with temps changing that much I'd suggest re-seating the cooler at the same time.

if you can, Upgrade!  the stock cooler is garbage, and for temp testing use aida64
