Hello,

I have recently downloaded VMware Workstation Player, and set a VM  with Linux Mint running on it. However, the performance hit is significant. Linus has shown that you can game on a virtual machine with virtually an insignificant performance hit. I was curious why that is, and if anyone has any advice to reduce the performance hit.

My PC's specs are a 3770k, 16 gb of Ram, and a GTX 660 ti if that matters at all.

Pentium G3258 | MSI Z97 PC Mate | G.SKILL 4x4GB 1066MHz | 500GB Samsung 2.5" | Stock cooler | Pending GPU | EVGA 500B | Antec DF-35

GoPro Hero 3 Silver | Netgear R7000 Nighthawk with DD-WRT | HP Officejet Pro 8610 | Canon iP110 | AudioTechnica ATR2500 USB

It will not let me pass through the GPU though

Plenty of hardware for Linux.. what exactly are you trying to do?

I pretty much restrict VMs to sandboxing new applications or more recently (as in within the last 30 minutes) developing my own personal Hangouts bot.

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure you can't pass through the gpu to a VMware workstation virtual machine.

This is because the host operating system is using the device. You may get 3d acceleration with it but it won't perform like linus's builds did.

You need a dedicated host os, like unraid or a hypervisor like vmware esxi for example.

CPU: i5-6600k GPU: Gigabyte G1 Gaming 980Ti Ram: 16GB DDR4 SSD: Samsung 950Pro 512gb m.2
