First Build

Lavin A.

Hi, I'd like some advice for my first build.

I'm gonna use this PC for gaming, Cinema 4D, Photoshop and Premiere Pro.

Here's the part list:

CPU: Intel Core i7-4790k (I'll run this on turbo boost @4.4GHz) (Stock cooler)

Motherboard: MSI z97 Gaming 5

Ram: G.Skill Ripjaws X 16 GB (2x8) 1600 MHz

PSU: Corsair CS550M 500 Watt 80+ Gold

Case: NZXT Noctis 450 Black and Red

Main concern:

GPU: MSI GTX 970 4g gaming / MSI r9 390 8g gaming

  • Which GPU should I use and why? My concern here is that this variant of the r9 390 is very rare in availability here and also around a $100 more expensive than the GTX 970.
  • Also, does r9 390 have a huge performance gain over the 970 in directx 12?

Other concerns I have:

  1. Do I need 8gb of VRAM?
  2. Do I need an 1866 MHz ram instead of 1600?
  3. Do I need an aftermarket cooler for running the cpu at turbo boost?
  4. If in case I get a 1866 MHz Ram, I would need to use the XMP profile, will it work well with turbo boost?
  5. Is the PSU (CS550M) suitable for this build? / Do I need a higher watt PSU?

Thanks in advance for any kind of help.

CPU: Intel Core i5-6600k @ 4.5ghz 1.33v | Motherboard: MSI Z170-a Gaming M5 | RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16gb (2x8gb) ddr4 2400mhz | GPU: Zotac GTX 980 Amp! Why are you only considering the MSI 390? There are plenty of other options. RIGNT NOW the 390 has an advantage in DX12, in the future that may change it may not...no one can really say for certain. It depends how good of a job Nvidia does with its drivers. I would personally go for a 390 for the extra VRAM though -- but not for $100 more or even close to that (unless Premiere benefits a lot from Cuda, I dont know if it does).

You don't need 8gb of VRAM, but it's nice for the future. If it's basically the same price, then theres no reason not to go for faster RAM, but I wouldn't pay a lot extra for it. You should get an aftermarket cooler (at least a cheapish one -- $30~) so you can overclock and/or not have to listen to the loud stock cooler. You often need to disable XMP to be able to overclock your cpu further (overclocking your cpu > overclocking your ram). The wattage is fine, but you should get a higher quality psu -- if you're in the US, then I would look at something like an EVGA GQ750w, the wattage is way overkill, but it's only a bit more expensive than the 650w version but 750w offers a lot more headroom for SLI/Crossfire.

1. For 1080p gaming, you won't be pushing the GTX 970's barrier of 3.5GB (technically 4GB but you know what I mean).

2. No.

3. You should get an aftermarket cooler to overclock the CPU. The stock cooler isn't good enough.

4. It'll work.

5. There are better choices. The EVGA SuperNOVA 550 G2 would be a great PSU to have.

And there's no way in hell a R9 390 is worth a $100 more than the GTX 970. Get the GTX 970 or a different R9 390 model if it's around the same price as the GTX 970.

No. A good air cooler will be better than a mediocre AIO.

see a good air cooler is around 80 usd but this is cheaper

No, like a $40 air cooler will outperform it. An $80~ cooler competes with 240mm AIOs.

No, I'm not. Also, thanks for all the replies. I'm considering the 970 gaming 4g and the hyper 212 evo. Would anyone suggest some PSUs? Some parts are available at almost twice the price here so I'd like some options regarding that.

How is this trolling... Just because his name is 'Mr Troll'? He's only looking for help.

Way to be judgemental and trying to shift the blame of your incorrect statement to someone who is simply only asking some questions and guidance.

No. The G1/NEX series aren't good. The G2, GQ, B2 surpass it easily.

While the Corsair CS isn't the best, it's still better than EVGA's NEX series.

EVGA PSUs aren't available here and can only be imported for twice the cost, the best one I could really buy would be some corsair power supply. (also a few Antec ones maybe)

in what

It's a PSU made by FSP and it's honestly pretty meh. Less reliable and it's pretty much on par with Corsair's CX series, not suitable for any gaming or overclocking.
