Its Upgrade Time!

DanteOnLTT

Hello!
The time has come to upgrade my PC, which is great and all but there are many options and I have a few requirements for my new build: to be able to game at 1440p @144hz, to be able to stream games such as bf4 to twitch and render video and to feel comfortable with my new setup (if that makes sense? xD). Below you should find an image of what I'm working with now.

I have drafted out some ideas, but honestly the specs change everyday. Here are two ideas I had:
1) i7 6700k, z170a mobo, gtx 980ti, 16/32gb ram, two asus pg279q monitors (one peripheral, one for games)
2) i7 5930k, Sabertooth x99 mobo, gtx 980ti, 32gb ram, (and maybe one asus pg279q, otherwise just stick with the two 1080p 60hz I have now

My budget is around £1500-2000, please make as many suggestions as you wish.
Thanks in advance,

Dan

I would go with the x99 build but save money and get a 5820k vs the 5830k unless your going to do 3-4 sli.

I would go with the second option, BUT and I know I'm gonna get hate for this but go with a 390x.

This is in your budget if you are willing to keep those two monitors.

Why I wrote motherboards instead of monitors, I have no clue.

Yes, but for 1440p a 390x would make more sense in my opinion. Not to mention that you could spend more on a CPU if you choose.

Nah your choice was solid other than over spending on the cpu for the extra features you didn't need.

You just have to decide if you will benefit from X99.

How would it make more sense for 1440p when the 980ti is the best card for 1440p? He is already going for one of the best cpus on that market and anything better than it isn't required by him.

the 5820k has been continuously pointed out as looking to be a much better buy, especially if you only run two cards. but as games still favor the 4-core route, the 5820k should be opted for more than just gaming in my opinion.

Don't fail me now as i've failed you then.

I think I'll go with the 5820k for the extra cores over a 6700k, and utilize that 980ti power for games, to make up for the 6700k's faster clock speed.

As mentioned I will also be using my pc to stream and also to render video

You're right, the 980 ti is the best card, but it is also 200$ more expensive, depending on which one you go with. I was simply suggesting a money saving idea, that's all.

Just overclock the 5820k and you will be right with the 6700k on clock speeds.

If you want a PC that can really render and can keep up with current GPUs you could get two Xeon E5 2670s. They are 8 core chips with hyperthreading. So you would have 16 cores and 32 threads. The chips are super cheap right now too. I got mine for 65US on Ebay. The motherboards are a little expensive but overall it would make for a killer PC.

My Work in Progress PC 2.0 https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/540583-xeon-build-20-code-name-xenox (Hopefully this one boots.)
