To be honest, it really doesn't matter much as long as it is from a good manufacturer like Cooler Master, Noctua, Arctic Silver etc. 

 

But if you still want 1-2 degree difference and don't mind spending extra money get IC Diamond.

Everyone will have their own best one. However any compound that has metal mixed in it will perform better though. Personally I use Arctic Silver 5.

Wasn't there a thing about IC Diamond ruining CPUs because of its thick graininess?

Yes, as I understand the situation the actual diamond particles were too large and caused damage to cpu's and coolers when pressure was applied.

Oh yes, It works quite well now but it is diamond so the chance is always there.

Mhm. I still went with Noctua NT-H1 to be safe when I bought mine

The difference is mostly negligible at best. Any thermal paste included with a CPU cooler should be used instead of buying aftermarket.

BTW Diamond is the best thermal conductor known the man so it is a trade off. Best performance possible but with the smallest of chance of slight damage to components.
