Here's the PCPP.

I'm planning on building this now (GPU comes last, already have a case) and upgrading to better hardware later. I just wanted to make sure everything looked good and I also want to ask exactly what I should plan on upgrading.

The CPU is obviously fine. I'm going to be keeping it for quite a while. The HDD is also pretty okay, I'm going to buy an SSD at some point as well.

I don't know about the PSU. Should I spend a bit more money to upgrade it when I upgrade the rest of my parts, or is it okay to keep? It's non-modular and pretty inexpensive.

The same goes for the motherboard. It only has two DIMM slots, and it's an H110M, so I might plan on upgrading to a nicer motherboard (better audio and internet plus more DIMM slots.)

I'm going to end up getting a total of 16GB of RAM eventually. Should I spend the same price on one more stick or spend a bit more on two new sticks of faster DDR4? 2666 to 3000 mhz, probably. It helps some things.

How about the GPU? Should I keep it for a while (and upgrade sometime after Pascal and Polaris are released?)

Windows 10 is listed as $45 because I'm buying a Windows 7 OEM and using the license to get Windows 10 before July 29th.

My budget WON'T be an issue for my upgrades. They're just upgrades, so I'll just be able to afford them when I get the money. I'm buying such a cheap build because I don't have the most amount of money.

If you're going to upgrade later, your initial setup needs to reflect what you are willing to upgrade.

For me, when I build a starter system that I'm going to upgrade, I get the PSU I want, the case I want, and the motherboard I want.  Those are the items I don't want to have to buy twice.  So if I was going to say do a full i7 skylake build with a 980ti or whatever eventually.. but couldn't afford it all at once, I would still get a solid z170 motherboard, but instead get the cheapest cpu that will fit that socket.  That way later on, I don't have to replace say $320 worth of hardware, I'm only replacing a $60 pentium cpu.  I would start with half or 1/4 the ram I wanted, at the speed I wanted, and later add more.  Basically try to get the most out of my money all while having a still functioning system.

But if you are willing to just throw away a whole motherboard and an i5 if you decide to upgrade to an overclockable i5 or i7 later on, chuck a psu and ram to replace it later.. that's totally up to you :)

Yay for seemingly passive aggressive sarcasm. Allow me to build off of your attitude.

First of all, did you even read the post? I said I wouldn't be upgrading a CPU because the i5 and I was also wondering if I should just get a second stick of RAM or instead get two new ones of higher speeds.

Second of all, you do know what "spare parts" means, right? If a part of mine breaks down I'll have the extra RAM stick/PSU/motherboard/whatever to use until I can get a replacement or something.

Lastly, they're upgrades, not a purchase with a deadline or something. I can spend as much money as I want because I won't have a time limit on when I'm buying my things. I need a computer now, and I can make it better as I go.

You were wrong there, I meant nothing of the sort.. I was actually trying to help.  And I apologize if your self esteem is so low that that is your initial reaction

You said the cpu was fine, but you ALSO said "I also want to ask exactly what I should plan on upgrading."  So if I personally think that cpu is not fine, why wouldn't I suggest upgrading it?  You said a bunch of things that didn't make sense to me.  So all I tried to do was tell you what I would do.

Maybe before I tried to help a random stranger on the internet I should have taken into consideration that I just got home from a 12 hour shift in a forge, and that I've been sick for 3 days and that maybe after some nyquil and a couple glasses of scotch I could be incorrectly conveying my intentions...

Anyway, nice job being a dick.  Good luck with wasting your money. :$

Yeah, I'm pretty sure we're both being dicks here. I just have a reason to. You didn't initially and you still don't. If you're going to be a dick and then get angry when I respond to it then maybe the internet is not for you.

Seems pretty passive aggressive to me. Pretty sure it has nothing to do with my self esteem.

EDIT: Oh, and also, you never suggested that I switch out for an i7, you simply assumed that I would in a sarcastic way.

I have arrived! Got a history test to study for so I probably can't stay on tonight past this post (I saw best girl was in need of help and felt that this was a worthy cause) but here goes.

PSU is more wattage than you will need unless you go for two cards, but if you're going EVGA go for the g2/GS/b2 not the first series. EVGA makes pretty good PSUs, but the first version wasn't that great. It's cheap enough that you could swap it out later, but this is one where I would go with a higher quality component to start with if you can.

Motherboards don't really affect performance, but buying two wouldn't really be great. I understand it might not be a problem, but you can go with a more expensive one now.

As for the RAM, speed really doesn't matter unless you plan to be doing bandwidth intensive tasks (not gaming) and while dual channel is nice, it's really not a big enough performance boost that you should worry about it especially since this one stick is so cheap. Just grab another of the same later.

Of course, the motherboard and PSU upgrades I proposed are expensive, so I would esay take the money out of the GPU if you can. What do you plan to do with the computer and how do you feel about overclocking? What kind of parts do you expect to upgrade to? Is it safe to assume that your budget is what you spent here?I can't really decide on where to sink the most money without knowing a bit more about what the build is going to be used for.

I think that addressed all the questions, but I'm tired and sort of spacing out so if I missed anything please just write it as a one-liner.

ie. "Should I get this one stick of RAM, A single faster stick, or two sticks of faster RAM now?"

If this is hard for me to focus on now, tomorrow will be worse, so please just make me a list like that which I can address head on.

Insulting OP (again passive aggressively) is going to help. Promise. Not that I'm being particularly friendly here, but it's going to become a flame war anyways, I may as well take the initiative while reminding you that you can just abandon this thread (it works out better for both of us).

I don't see why the CPU wouldn't be fine. Not everyone needs hyperthreading or OCing, and it is quite a price premium for an i7.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tragic_hero. You misery isn't a tax on my good fortune and all that. Ayn Rand FTW.

And what a great person. Look, your post was entirely unhelpful. Obviously one shouldn't get an i5 to replace it with an i7. And adding an emoticon at the end doesn't make a post friendly.

Tip to those that are new on LTT forum- quote a post so that the person you are quoting gets a notification, otherwise they'll have no idea that you did. You can also use a tag such as @Ryoutarou97 (replace my username with anyone's. You should get a dropdown after you type the "@")to send a notification, but quoting is preferable.

Feel free to PM me about absolutely anything be it tech, math, literature, etc. I'll try my best to help. I'm currently looking for a cheap used build for around $25 to set up as a home server if anyone is selling.

If you are a native speaker please use proper English if you can. Punctuation, capitalization, and spelling are as important to making your message readable as proper night theme formatting is.

My build is fully operational, but won't be posted until after I get a GPU in it and the case arted up.
