First Build in 10 Years

ExecGamer

Hello and thank you for taking the time to read.

Budget & Location: Want to spend under $2400 not including monitor or other peripherals. After reading responses, I think I can cut down the cost of this setup by a few hundred dollars allowing me to get that 2nd gtx 980 TI hybrid much sooner.  Looking into how I can adjust the price without sacrificing that much.  Located in NYS USA.

Aim:  Mostly Gaming with max level setting of any game I wish to play, and possibly stream, for years to come.  If necessary will add a second video card in SLI down the road.  I want a beast of a machine that is quiet.

Monitors:  For the near future I am looking at getting a 27" 3k? monitor with g-sync, something like the Asus ROG Swift display.  In the future I may be interested in the Oculus Rift.

Peripherals:  Windows 10, probably Pro if that is the go to?

Why am I upgrading?

I have been thinking of getting a new gaming rig for some time now, originally I was going to pick up the G752 ASUS ROG Gaming Laptop with the gtx 980m and 32gb ddr4.  This thing runs super quiet and low noise is a requirement for me.

But after reading all of your guy's builds, it has inspired me to just build my own.  So I am looking at having what I think is a bit of an improvement on performance (over the laptop) for the same price ++$ for a monitor.

Have a look and please tell me if there is anything I should consider tweaking.   Still unsure of the case, I do like that it has a handle on it.

Case: Cooler Master Trooper (Rev. 2)  Black $171.97

Motherboard: MSI Computer ATX DDR4 3000 LGA 2011-3 Computer Motherboards X99A GAMING 7  $290.20

CPU: Intel Core i7-5820K Haswell-E 6-Core 3.3GHz LGA 2011-v3 140W Desktop Processor BX80648I75820K  $398

CPU CoolerNZXT Technologies Kraken X41 140mm All-In-One Liquid Cooling System  $113.95

MemoryCorsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (4 x 4GB) DDR4 DRAM 3000MHz (PC4-24000) $120.95

PSUCorsair RM Series, RM850, 850 Watt (850W), Fully Modular Power Supply, 80+ Gold Certified  $99

<<I am told this is not suffcient to run 2 of my gpu's, any help here is appreciated.>>

GPUEVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti 6GB HYBRID  $689.99  (psu should allow me to add another one down the line, apparently not)

StorageSamsung 850 EVO 500GB 2.5-Inch SATA III Internal SSD  x2  @ $148.89 each

Sound ProofingSilverStone 21-Inch x 15-Inch 4mm Thick 2-Piece Sound Dampening Acoustic EP0M Silent Foam  $15.99

Cosmos ® 12 Pieces Black Rubber PC CPU/Case Fan Mounting Screws Rivets x2 @ $5.85 each

Total: 2,333.39

The laptop I was going to buy is $2328.99

Also, the monitor I am eyeing is:  Asus ROG Swift PG278Q 27-Inch WQHD G-SYNC LED Gaming Monitor  A bit pricey at $680.70

*Still tempted to just buy the laptop, as it is pretty much ready to go as is. Will the performance gain really be that much?  I haven't built a rig in about 10 years so I will need to relearn everything... Any input here is greatly appreciated.  Also, I have a large external hdd that I will use for backup.

Also, yes, the performance gain will be very good. I assume you want to overclock because of your CPU choice?

Thank you for your reply, great question.  Yes I was looking at overclocking the CPU, so I went with what I think is a decent water cooling solution for it.  Can I do the same with Skylake and stay within budget?

You should be able to stay within budget, and I can definitely vouch for the Kraken

Do you need the dual SSDs just for storage space or for RAID?

get hdds, as yu dont want to kill your ssds 10% faster as using them for daily drivers

My thought on the 2 ssd's was to have one for the operating system and the other for games and such.

Not sure if it makes much sense to do that and it is actually a tiny bit cheaper to just buy one 1TB 850 EVO.

Also, seeing as how I only want to put only a few things in the case, would it make more sense getting a smaller case?

I am just worried about good airflow and low noise.

ssds are good for silence and speed. one 500gb ssd and a big wd red/wd green would be a good compromise.

This is your decision, your PC. I'm writing up a Skylake build list right now. Since you said you have a large backup I'd just raid 0 the drives into a 1tb mass and keep frequent backups.

I recently recommended this build to someone with a ~2500 budget looking for something similar:

I don't think I need 3tb for this rig, but maybe I am better off getting a 1-2tb wd red or green drive instead of the second ssd.  Can you recommend a mainboard that would better suit my needs?  Thanks.

You will see basically 1-2milisecond speed differences with running games,

The question, is are you willing to speed that extra $200 for a 1/100, 2/100 second increase in poening games?

However, putting the os on the ssds ina  good idea.

Howvere remember, if you raid 0 the drivers, and one dies, you ENTIRE os is gone.

I would suggest buying 4 250gb samsung evos and putting them in raid 10

He said he had a large backup drive. He can use Acronis and be just fine, I've never had an SSD die.

This will smoke pretty much ANYTHING you throw at it.

That's a terrible build... You have a H170 Motherboard with a 6700K and watercooling....Facepalm.

Not to mention you would be close to killing your entire build with a 860 WAT PSU... (If you where to overclock the 2 GPU's... and CPU {which you cant OC on that motherboard})

My new Gaming PC.

Spoiler

Case: Coolmaster CM690III, Motherboard: Asus Z170-AR, CPU: I5 6600K 4.6Ghz, OS: Windows 10 HP 64 bit, RAM: X1 8GB G.Skill DDR4, GPU: Galax GTX 960 (Overclocked), Storage: Kingston V300 SSD 120GB(OS), X2 1TB 5400RPM HDD, 500GB Samsung 7200RPM HD, PSU: Cougar RS 750 Watt, Peripherals: Logitech G910 Orion Spark,  World Of Tanks Edition 2014 DeathAdder Razer Mouse And Mouse Pad, Sennheiser HD 518. , Palsonic tftv6042fHD, Logitech Z506 5.1 Surround Sound Speakers

I don't think I need 3tb for this rig, but maybe I am better off getting a 1-2tb wd red or green drive instead of the second ssd.  Can you recommend a mainboard that would better suit my needs?  Thanks.

Please refer to the build I posted above.

you dont really have to spend all that much on a mainboard in my opinion, even for overclocking and i would get a 500gb ssd and a 3tb wd red/wd green.

If you thinnk about it, his $200 lga 2011-3 mobo is on th cheap side.

my godlike gaming cost $500

For the 5820k this http://www.mindfactory.de/product_info.php/Gigabyte-GA-X99-UD3-Intel-X99-So-2011-3-Quad-Channel-DDR4-ATX-Retail_975549.html
and for the 6700k this http://www.mindfactory.de/product_info.php/MSI-Z170-A-PRO-Intel-Z170-So-1151-Dual-Channel-DDR4-ATX-Retail_1015491.html

I would really ask others for their opinion because im not experenced with the 2011v3 and z170 stuff but those are very popular boards for a reasonable price. but i would take the second board with a 6700k for gaming

Edit: i just said 3tb because the price difference is not that big so why not go with the bigger one :)

                                                                                      wow... pretty empty here...

I did damn facepalm on the motherboard. The point of the crossfire is not to overclock it, and there is a decent amount of headroom power-wise, although definitely not for upgrades.

Thanks, I think this makes more sense to me.  Either this or 1 ssd and 1 hdd.  If I stick with SSD's, would I be safer with the OCZ Vector 180's? They have a 5 year warranty on them.
