Hi,

Since I have 32gb fast system RAM I doubt I'd ever need to rely on paging file. I know some programs automatically look for paging file and if none's found they give error or crash or whatev. But most applications don't do that (I think).

I also have a Seagate 1TB SSHD which can and will be used as my secondary drive (storage device - new volume, with no OS on it). Is it possible to move all my paging file to that SSHD? If yes,

1.) Will my programs know its location was altered?

2.) Is it safe?

3.) Will it have an impact on performance (by this I mean general performance like OS speed, responsiveness and 3D work like games FPS wise)? If yes, will it affect positively or negatively?

4.) Will I need to install an OS on the SSHD in order for this to work?

The reason I want to do this is because I use an SSD as my primary boot drive and it's only 250gb ~ (approx 200gb usable with hibernation disabled via cmd). I install GTA V and BF4 and boom 90% of my space is gone.

I'd be interested to learn if any apps look for a paging file and require it to work. In my view applications should just request memory & it's down to the Operating System to allocate it (whether from the RAM or pagefile etc.).

0. Is it possible to move=yes, as answered above.

1. Will your apps know=they likely shouldn't care or be concerned with it, it's the task of the underlying Operating System.

2. Is it safe=yes, your computer won't blow up etc. In the worst cases either your apps will run reaaaaaally slow or Windows might not boot in which case you just need to boot to safe mode & enable more memory/a larger page file size to be used.

3. Will it give better performance=It depends how frequently you're accessing that drive for storage, but yes you'll likely & probably get some improvement. For an optimal speed increase, you'd want the paging file on the latest drive type which is used only for that purpose (no other reads/writes to the drive are being performed).

4. Will you need to install an extra OS=No, think of it just like any other file, text or bmp etc.

Generally, it's best to leave the paging file to be managed by the OS. Can you not install those games to the larger sized hard drive for some reason if you're worried about space?
