What lens should I get?

Why type of photography do you do? Just normal stuff like street photography? Landscape? Portraits?

If you want a nice standard zoom lens then this is a great choice - http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/689623-REG/Sigma_583306_17_50mm_F2_8_EX_DC.html

If you want a great landscape / very wide lens then this is a great choice (I own one) - http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/882236-REG/Tokina_atx116prodxn_ii_AT_X_116_PRO_DX_II.html

And if you want a nice portrait lens then the famous 50 1.8 is the way to go - http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/766516-USA/Nikon_2199_AF_S_Nikkor_50mm_f_1_8G.html

The first two seem great, but they're twice as expensive as I'd like it to be.

Why doesn't it have glass on the end like most lenses do?

well what do u generally do and what do you want your new lens to do

I mostly do random stuff which is why I have a pretty generic lens. I would like to start doing landscapes, so a wide angle one would be nice.

Because it's a prime lens, it doesn't need that many glass elements compared to a zoom lens.

If you do random stuff, stick to your kit lens.  Any lens can be a lens used for landscape photography.  Wide angle, kit lens, standard zoom, super telephoto, etc.

If you want to get into landscape photography, consider investing in some ND and gradient ND filters.

in terms of the 50mm lens i suggested its called a 'prime' lens so it only has 1 - 2 pieces of glass as their is no zoom it gives a sharper clearer image and the low aperture gives good bokeh

For a general walk-around lens I recomend the 35mm 1.8g.

It's wider than the 50mm.  I find 50mm to be a little to narrow for an all purpose lens.
