Hi,

im currently learning a lot networking (going for my CCNA) so i decided to build a server.

Im still not so sure what hardware i should use. I hope you guys can help me.

What the server should do:

Running VMware vSphere Hypervisor 6.0

VM with Arch Linux and ZFS

VM with Sophos XG Firewall

VM with MediaServer maybe Kodi

(VM with little Game Server or Website) maybe

Hardware i want to use:

2x Intel Xeon E5-2670 ~200€

Intel S2600CP2 or Tyan S7050GM4NR  (never heard of Tyan before) ~250€

Budget for Mobo and CPU: ~800€.

My question:

Does the Xeon has enough performance? Or is there a better alternative?

Which mobo should i use never heard Tyan before and the Intel one was some bad reviews. Any cheap ebay alternative?

Should i use ECC unregistered RAM?

The VM with MediaServer and Website need to acess my ZFS VM is this VM setup fine with esxi as base or should i go another way?

Does it make even sense to run the firewall in a VM?

What is your total budget? Are you willing to buy HP/Dell Rack servers from Ebay?

Already have a Supermicro SC 933 3HE from a friend for free.

And im going to buy a LSI 9211-8i for all the HDDs.

I'm sorry. I've have no knowledge about Supermicro. I've seen it, is it an actually server or a File server?

I'm not sure if I understand your question.

The server should run a firewall and a file server both in VMs. The VM with the file server should act as a NAS. And a VM with lets say Kodi or a web server should be able to acess data from the file server.

I do understand that. But what I don't know is whether the Supermicro SC 933 3HE is a file server with it's only raid card or an actual server with a xeon and whatnot

Because with Dell, they have Something called Dell R710, which is a rack server with actual server hardware. One the other hand, They are something called a PowerVault, which is a storage server.

I only got the case with PSU and SAS/SATA Backplane so does it matter? I think the case is designed for storage server because it has 15 HDD Bays. My plan was it to buy a mainboard and the HBA i mentioned in the first post. Then i would connect the HBA and maybe the mobo sata ports with the backplane of the case.

Ah, so it's a storage server as I figured. All you need to is the LSi card and some drives. What about the actual server that will be hosting the VMs?

It would be kinde expensive to buy an extra case etc. Whats speaks against an all in one server? Heat problems? Instability with ZFS in a VM? Security issus with the firewall?

What is your Budget? You can buy Dell/HP servers from Ebay. Unless you build one yourself.

My buget is about 1k. I already have a case for storage server and the LSi card. So should i buy some hardware for the storage server and then some more powerful hardware and a case for the VM server?

Im still dont get my i shouldnt but everything into one server.

The most user for the storage server are 2 people and the VMs.

Well what I used to when I had my servers before I left my parents house, I had a Dell 2950 PowerEdge Server. Running VMware ESXI 5.5. I had installed VMware on a USB stick and then I had 6 450GB HDDs running the datastore.

This is an old image, but you'll understand.

You could buy this:

http://www.ebay.de/itm/Dell-PowerEdge-R610-2x-Xeon-E5504-24-GB-RAM-H700-iDRAC6-Dual-PSU-/181968821021?hash=item2a5e2fdb1d:g:g7EAAOSwKtlWq9Hl

No sure if it comes with with any HDDs. I don't understand German

YouTube video of it's sound:

Go to 7:25, that's when he turns on the server.

Sorry for the late reply, currently traveling as we speak.

Glad I could help. I believe there are websites which allow you to build your own server. Try searching online.

If you need any help send me a pm
