Cheap Camera

Go to solution Solved by ALwin,

As you need it for video, I would recommend you getting a camcorder for that $150 budget.  Something like this will get you close to that angle of view you want at the shortest focal length.

Hello all!

I have a project I'm doing, and of all the weird things it needs, one of them is a 60 degree field of view. Are there any cheap cameras that have this? Sorry for the weird question.

Thanks!

Ah, right, yes, price. Duh. Preferably under 150 would be great. (I know it's not much, but I'm not trying to be JJ Abrams or Paul Greengrass)

I need to ask you something else, when you say 60 degree, how is it measured?  Horizontally, vertically or diagonally (like how tv screen sizes are measured) in relation to the shape of the camera sensor?

That is a great question. " Camera view angle is the product of two primary factors: the lens and sensor. As a general rule, the larger the sensor, the greater view angle it can support. A 1/4-inch sensor can usually support between a 60 and 90 degree view angle, while a 1/3-inch sensor can support up to 120 degrees easily. Many cameras offer very wide fields of view, but if the sensor is inadequate, an increased field of view does nothing to improve the camera’s usability and can actually decrease its effectiveness. Optics do play a factor, as the lens is the determinant of the field of view, but since the sensor serves as the bottleneck, it is usually the more important factor"

Wow, thank you EBay

That doesn't answer my question of how you want 60 degrees to be measured and why you are being specific about it.

Do you want a camera sensor + lens combo that is able to view 60 degrees up-down, side-to-side or from one corner to the opposite corner (diagonal)?

With a photo camera, say 35mm Full Frame and using a 50mm lens, the approximate angles of view you have are:

Vertical: 27 degrees

Horizontal: 40 degrees

Diagonal (similar to how tv and computer monitor sizes are measured): 47 degrees

If I use a wider lens on the same camera, I get an even wider angle of view across all 3 dimensions.

Sorry, didn't read the question correctly. I meant horizontally.

It has 16mp but can only shoot 720p

That works fine. 1080P is always nice, but no huge requirement. It's for project that I need the shot more than the quality.

At your budget you will be well better off with a camcorder than a photo camera that can record video.  The camcorder will have better internal mics and image stabilization optimized for video recording.

You don't have to buy the specific model I posted, as long as you look for a model that has the widest focal length specified as "35mm Equivalent Focal Length" around 30mm (or less) you will get the angle of view you need.
