So my ignorant parents have waited so long between modem/router upgrades that our current setup is incapable of delivering all that we are paying Comcast for. Comcast says we should get a modem with a minimum of 8 down, my parents want 16. they also want an n-router, dual band, with a/c. please excuse any lack of technical terms, i'm literally quoting the Comcast guy, and this isn't my area of expertise. can you guys recommend a setup?

Just a guy who peaked at building back in the days of the GTX 980. If you see me here, assume i have technical knowledge akin to a committed hobbyist builder back then. If something's changed, you'll need to tell me(nicely plz). I'm probably asking for help with the modern build scene since I have no clue what's going on.

Can't they just lease/rent a modem from Comcast? That's what I do with Cable One. If they own it then they have to exchange it if something fails on it, without me having to foot the bill. It's only like $6 a month or something insignificant like that.

My modem has a built in wireless AC router that runs at 100Mb/s download and 5Mb/s upload. I can consistently download stuff at 13MB/sec while my wife streams videos on tv.

Well as far as modems go you would need a docsis 3.0 compliant modem regardless of the speed and the slowest one supports a minimum of 300 down and usually 100 up.

i currently have this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16825124009&cm_re=c3700-_-25-124-009-_-Product

the speeds i pay for is 75 down 10 up and i get about 90 down 20 up with the modem and the wifi maxes out about 50 down.

it has 2 2.4 ghz radios and 2 5ghz radios and really good features.

the last time i checked here in florida the rental fee for comcast modems was 15 a month. might vary in different areas.

They don't want to, they're looking for a one-time fee.

When I said 16 down, I wasn't referring to speed. maybe you can explain this better, but the Comcast guy said Comcast has a total of 20 channels to carry data connected to our house. Our current modem recognizes four, and modern ones recognize eight or sixteen?

When I had Comcast I had the Motorola SURFboard SB6141 which has 8 download and 4 upload channels, I was pushing 150Mbps without issue over IPv4 and IPv6. Looks like Best Buy carries them for $69.99 which is less than I paid for it almost 3 years ago. Solid modem, just need a nice router to go with it.

most connections would need about 8 or so down to achive a maximum of 340 Down and for upstreams about 4 are needed for about 122 up.  So if your speeds are faster than that then you need a faster modem.

How can I find number of download channels? It's not listed on a lot of these modems.

my parents seem quite determined to get 16 download channels.

I found it on the SB6141's website and on the Amazon page (it said 8x4 meaning 8 down, 4 up).

Thank you!
