Hi Guys

I recently got my first SSD and after around 10 days of using it as a storage device for my steam games I felt that I was not getting the full benefit, so I decided to take the leap and attempt to clone my HDD to the SSD using the samsung migration software.

As my HDD(1TB) is larger than my SSD (250 GB) I had to remove some previously installed programs, and also using the migration wizard I opted to not include various videos, music, images and 'Other' files and I was eventually able to proceed with the new step in the migration wizard.

All appeared to be going well, until the wizard full completed with the error "Cloning failed - 00001 [fffffff]" and after googling this error code I could not find any other issues for this SSD with that error code. I attempted this migration a total of 4 times as of writing this post, each time resulting in the error code.

I eventually gave up on trying to migrate my HDD to SSD so I just wanted to get the SSD back into a usable state. However I'm having various issues trying to format and assign a drive letter to the device using Windows 10 disk management, EaseUS partition master and MiniTool partition Wizard free. In Windows 10 disk management when attempting to format the partition I get the following error message "An unexpected error has occurred. Check the System Event Log for more information on the error. Close the Disk Management console, then restart Disk management or restart the computer" I've restarted both the computer and Disk management window multiple times to no avail. I have been able to format the drive   using both EaseUS and MiniTool however I still run into the following issue.

I am unable to assign a drive letter to the device. In disk management when I attempt this I get the following error " The operation failed to complete because the Disk management console view is not up to date. Refresh the view by using the refresh task. If the problem persists close the disk management console, then restart the Disk management or restart the computer". I've refreshed, restarted the program and restarted the computer multiple times to no avail. When assigning the drive letter using MiniTool I am able to get the process to complete, however in Windows explorer the SSD does not display with the assigned letter.

Other things I have also tried include uninstalling the device from the PC and then reinstalling and then trying the above steps. I've also deleted the entire volume on the SSD and tried to reformat the device as NTFS, FAT32 in order to assign a drive letter, but all my attempts fail.

I've got no other thoughts on what to do to get this working again and I'm open to advice.

Thanks for reading

Regards

for the drive format you need a low lvl format program since its broke somewhere the partition type gpt/other  are messed up .

how much from the 1tb were you trying to move anything above 240 gb will not fit in any way. no more then 200gb if you try the software   that only would leave you with 9gb if magican auto configs rapid , its been along time since i used it to clone onto my 840 evo . when you first got the drive did it work correctly if so , then if the low level format doesn't work then contact Samsung  they might be able to help . but someone here probably knows exactly how to fit it .

did you try erasing the partition thru the disk management screen and then try a format ? ive dealt with it not formatting on a really old disk but that worked clearing the partition then the format would complete

The amount of data I was migrating was 189 GB. I've also successfully erased the partition with Disk management however I still encounter the error in the OP when trying to format.

I've posted my OP on other forums and someone who has encountered a similar issue was unable to fix it so he sent it back to the retailer and got a refund. I've now got a replacement disk sent from Amazon and will be sending my current disk back as faulty.

Thanks for your help!

If you still want to format it, I would recommend gparted.

You can find an installer for an USB stick here.
