More memory = Faster gaming

For those that think having more RAM doesn't matter in games, and yes going from 8 to 16GB gives more fps overall, and going from 16GB to 32GB can add a little to it aswell due to less stress on the cpu (some gpu's actualy use your system memory too) . idk ive never gone over 6gb of use of the ram while gaming i have 8gb of hyperx and ddr4

Cool, did not know this. I doubt small indie games would have this kind of "optimization" (if you want to call it that). It is cool for AAA titles though,

Thats typical reasoning, but the speed Ram gives doesn't rely on how much you are using. Just look at SSD disks wich are memory related too, the more memory you leave free, the more responsive the disk is. Fill it up and your performance goes down. It's the same story for ram.. keep in mind, pc's are known for their hidden bottlenecks, how little they might seem.. it all matters slightly... and "not much" still counts.

The diffirence is indeed hard to notice eventhough its there, but its still better overall... especialy when your doing heavy tasks.

See it this way.. if you put 16GB in your system you'll be future proof for a couple of years, but after that... having had more memory wouldn't have made you notice any performance loss. I guess it depends on what you want.. Do you want your system to tell you when its time to upgrade, or do you want it to stfu and die (after you don't need it anymore). Sure you could buy more ram lateron.. but you'd be missing out on some frames in the meanwhile.. I guess it all depends on how easily you are satisfied. But knowing 32GB memory from crucial costs less then 32GB of any brand, and the fact that higher busrate doesn't mean much in performance... buying those modules lateron wouldn't necessarily make them less expensive in the end...

 

But as said, it all depends on what type of CPU you use and how you want it to work.

After having had my system 5 years in a row, I guess I've gotten to the point where everything has to be perfect when buying a new pc

I guess you are a nice and tidy user then... When I'm in windows with all my apps open (without any broswer open) I allready use 3.5GB of Ram, with my apps in firefox that will become 5GB and while gaming up to 8GB. Believe it or not but a lot of us aren't tidy

Once you hit 16GB, adding more does almost nothing for performance, to the point that $ per % increase is not worth it.

Dunno if he does, but the problem with most testers is that they always go through the traditional methods wich "ignore" certain performance.

The only way to realy know the performance is to be in dense area's and test max frames over a longer period of time.

4 to 8 can be noticeable, at least when dealing with AAAs.

8 to 16? Not really. Anything past 8 gb with a normal usage scenario starts to give diminishing returns (to varying degrees)

I'm honest. I've never seen usage past 5GB when I have 8 and I don't see any difference in fps

And what if you have a memory leak? I've maxed out my memory a few times online just because of bugs on websites, same happened to me before in some games.

Wouldn't it be better to have more RAM in this case?

I barely go over 4gb (unless I'm heavily modding Skyrim) and that's with a game+netflix+steam/battle.net/origin/uplay+chrome (at least 3 tabs open). Was going to upgrade to 16gb but I don't see the use right now

More ram when using more mods, isn't that an indication that better graphics use more memory?

I tried to force it once. Took 30 tabs of chrome on various buggy sites to get me to 7.5GB when playing a game. It's not worth past 8GB

In my opinion, it isn't worth spending another £40-50 on another stick of 8GB RAM for 4 extra frames unless I was in desperate need of it.

Mods aren't limited to graphics and I'm still using vanilla HD textures.

Why I'm confused revsilverspine? Latest GPU's use HD texture support and at the same time they increase their onboard memory.. wich could indicate that more detailled textures use up more space and that having a bigger buffer could keep your performance in the safe zone... But I understand getting a card with enough Vram should handle the job just fine

Thing is, the textures are stored only in the VRAM, not in SYS RAM.
