I have read a TON of threads an none solved my issues. Im sorry if there is in fact a solution elsewhere.

System:

MSI 970 Gaming Mobo

FX-8350 cooled with Hydro Series H100i GTX

16G DDR3 corsair 1866 RAM

MSI r9 390 GPU

250G SSD

5T 3.5"

140mm 118cfm top fan, 120 74cfm rear fan, 2 x 120mm push on radi and 1 x 120mm pull on radi.

850w PSU

Windows 10 64bit clean install

Monitor is Acer G257HU with built in speakers

Headset is SteelSeries Siberia 150

A link to my pc setup and my afterburner fan profile.

So I connect my monitor via displayport to GPU and all sound is fine. I plug in USB headset and set it is default in windows sound control and all is fine. When im done gaming and just want to use my monitor speakers, I open the windows sound manager and select my AMD High Definition Audio Device as default but no sound. So I disable the USB headset and all other sound options, still no sound. I unplug the USB headset and still no sound. I have no sound through my monitor until I reboot my computer. Why cant I switch back an forth between without a reboot.

I have all the latest drivers. I have uninstalled them and reinstalled them to ensure no old drivers were interfering.

I know about needed to restart programs after the default is switched. I used to have a wireless Logitech connected via USB and never had any issues. Even after I change the default the USB still has sound. When I unplug the USB there is no sound from anything through the monitor speakers. Nothing corrects so far it except a reboot. Unfortunately as odd as it sounds I dont have a 3.5mm to plug in and test. Maybe ill snag one from work today and check.

If you look in playback devices, will the audio indicator move? I have zero experience with usb audio devices as i still use analog rca for everything audio related. My soundcard drivers didn't like windows 10 though. Somehow it just started working a couple weeks ago. I dont like the fact that win10 doesn't play a sound when you press the volume slider, thats very annoying for me when i try to troubleshoot something quickly.

My slider does play sound when i have my headset on or after I unplug it and reboot my system.  An no the indicator does not move when my monitor is set as default. When my headset is plugged in and default the indicator (equalizer) is green, an then when I switch my monitor as default the equalizer still lights green for the usb even though the monitor is checked green default. I disable the USB, monitor is default and still no movement from the equalizer/indicator.  Hope this makes sense.

Can you get audio through your monitor if you have the headphones plugged in or does it mess up straight away? Also does it have any effect if you have the headphones plugged in all times? Try plugging your headphones in, setting default to your monitor and rebooting.

  • 2 weeks later...

Update. My husband has the same exact system as I do but he uses 3.5mm jack headset. He is also having this issue.

When headsets are plugged in and set as default they work fine. When I try to switch back and set my monitor as default there is no sound. Sound continues to play through headset. Unplugging/disabling headset does not work to bring sound back through monitor.

Reboot and monitor sound is fine even if headset is plugged in. Our pc never sleeps, but I have just discovered when the monitor sleeps we have no sound when it wakes. This is the same whether or not we have headsets plugged in.

When I go to sound settings and test my monitor I get the error that my device is being used by another app.  (I have unchecked Allow applications to take exclusive rights).  So I assume the problem stems from this but have found no solution.

I dont. In the past week we have only used (and i say we because i have 2 identical builds sitting side by side that have the same issue) Chrome, Ark Survival game, Guild Wars 2 game, MSI Afterburner, RivaTuner, and Steam are the only common apps we use.  An we had the issue before Rivra and Afterburner.

It has to be something related to the monitor going to sleep or its related to the displayport. Never had any issues with old 3.5mm speakers. Only thing that changed were new monitor with builtin speakers to clear clutter from desk.  There are a lot of people that seem to have had this issue but I cannot seem to find a fix either myself or on forums. lesigh

Thanks for reading and trying to help though!

Guess I need to keep reading and also look at all the apps that might be running in the background on both machines and then disable them all and re enable one at a time and hope i find the culprit.

I still reeeeealy feel like when the monitor goes to sleep it shuts off the speakers and when it wakes the computer has no idea the monitor turned off the speakers and thinks its still in use as another device. Idk how to properly explain it.

Can you set the monitor so that it doesn't sleep? Does it do this if you turn off the monitor manually? Steam has a chat function, but i never have heard of any problems with it.
