Mobo Suggestions Needed

Go to solution Solved by Curufinwe_wins,

Please for the love of God.  Don't do that system with Z170. You are straight up losing  performance compared to x99 in sli.

Even if you have a 6700k already,  I'd highly recommend selling it and getting a 5820k and an x99 mobo.

As for your color scheme,  basically all msi  boards will match well,  and the x99 rampage 5 extreme has a red and black color.

I'm getting dual GTX 980 Tis.

And I'm getting 1 x Samsung 950 Pro SSD and 1 x Intel 750 Series SSD.

The two SSDs are NVMes and require x4 PCIe slots.

Will the ASUS ROG MAXIMUS VIII EXTREME do the job?

If not, what black/red mobos will?

CPU: Intel i7-6700k - GPU: EVGA GTX 1080 FTW - Motherboard: Asus Z170-A - RAM: Vengeance LPX DDR4 16GB 3000MHz - CPU Cooler: Corsair Hydro GTX H110i - PSU: EVGA SUPERNOVA 650W P2 - Case: NZXT H440 White/Black - OS: Windows 10 Home - Mouse: Logitech G502 - Keyboard: Corsair Strafe Cherry MX Red RGB

It will probably work but realise that means you are using two different types of pcie 16x port for the mvme ssds.

What do you mean by two different types of pcie 16x ports?

The 6700K only provides 16 PCIe 3.0 lanes, which is only enough to accommodate your GPUs. The rest is handled by the chipset, which provides 20 PCIe lanes that it runs through what I think is the equivalent of a PCIe 3.0 4x connection with the CPU...

My question is, why are you getting both a 950 pro and a 750?

One is a boot drive and one for programs that I use on daily bases.

Fair enough.

Either way, I would recommend going with X99 if you're making such heavy use of PCIe. A 5820K provides enough direct lanes for all of those components, which would end up being faster overall.

The X99 doesn't fit my needs as I need a black/red mobo.

Yes, it would work, but X99 is designed to handle that many PCIe lanes... Z170 moreso just happens to.

You do know of the Rampage V Extreme, right?

Yeah but the color of the X99 would be a big problem because the color scheme of my PC + Setup is black and red.

Oh, so you already have the CPU. Then you can't use X99 anyway...

Well, like I said, it will work, just not as well as on X99.

He'll get 8x for each GPU and 4x from the chipset for each drive. It wouldn't work if he only had 4x for one of the cards.

@Dash Lambda Ugh, I'm new to all this PCIe stuff.

Each GTX 980 Ti uses a x16 PCIe slot so how can I use 8x for each GPU?

CPU: Intel i7-6700k - GPU: EVGA GTX 1080 FTW - Motherboard: Asus Z170-A - RAM: Vengeance LPX DDR4 16GB 3000MHz - CPU Cooler: Corsair Hydro GTX H110i - PSU: EVGA SUPERNOVA 650W P2 - Case: NZXT H440 White/Black - OS: Windows 10 Home - Mouse: Logitech G502 - Keyboard: Corsair Strafe Cherry MX Red RGB

The physical slot is 16x, but the CPU controls how much bandwidth is actually provides depending on what devices it sees.

So, when a GPU in a 16x slot is using 8x, it's quite literally only using half the slot. The other half is deactivated to provide bandwidth for whatever's taking up the other lanes.

Each GPU in SLI will switch to x8/x8. Crossfire gets x8/x8/x4.

@Curufinwe_wins

Note: No I didn't buy the CPU yet & I decided to go with a 5930K.

Okay, so let me get this straight.

If I go with a 5930K + Rampage V Extreme, I would be able to run 2 GTX 980 Tis in SLI + have 2 NVMe SSDs (Intel 750 + Samsung 950 Pro)

If yes, would I need to configure some things in the BIOS so that everything runs fine?

Thanks in advance.

It will work fine out of the box, but there is NO REASON AT ALL to buy the 5930k. It doesn't overclock better and you don't need the lanes. Ever.
