As a gamer is there ever any reason to want/need more than 16gb of ram? Would 32gb be better or would I see no benefit at all?

The only reason I ask is during some games, Ark and GTA5 in particular my game will crash, citing lack of memory, or Windows is running low on memory. close program yes/no.

The memory I have now is 16gb Corsair Vengeance LP. It is ten years old though so could this be the problem?

Any recommendations on brands and amounts/speed etc are greatly appreciated...

No benefit,  and I find it hard to believe you are running out of memory, unless there is some sort of issue

Ram should not really degrade, perhaps a fresh system install would help clean things up

If you run *anything* other than the game I would definitely recommend more than 16GB of ram.

I run a few virtual machines in the background (back then each one had about 256mb-756mb or ram) and if I left chrome and skype open overnight I would have memory leaks everywhere.

On a fresh boot with the virtual machine going I would be using about 3-4 GB after a day or so it would end up being 6-7 GB as now it cached everything and won't release it.

Start running GTA5 and it'll shoot up to about 12GB and that's when Windows will start alerting about lack of ram.

I learned the hard way that if you ignore Windows's alert (even though you still have 4GB of ram left) it'll take matters into it's own hands.

What sort of 'issues' should I be looking for? If that's not too wide ranging a question... :)

AJ

Yeah a pretty wide ranging question, perhaps run some benchmarks, mem tests, temp tests etc, see what resources are being used and what issues come up

it might not do anything if your other hardware is not good enough to benefit from 32gb of ram.  but if you have a modern GPU and a good motherboard then you will probably see some improvement.

I'm running a 980ti on a Maximus Hero VII mobo...

I've since discovered my page file was set to 0 on my OS drive...

Oh yes, I usually have Teamspeak open when gaming plus Chrome is  open on my second monitor...

AJ :)

How many chrome tabs do you run?

Chrome uses a lot of ram.

AMD Ryzen R7 1700 (3.8ghz) w/ NH-D14, EVGA RTX 2080 XC (stock), 4*4GB DDR4 3000MT/s RAM, Gigabyte AB350-Gaming-3 MB, CX750M PSU, 1.5TB SDD + 7TB HDD, Phanteks enthoo pro case
