Gmail battery drain

Second time in a week this has happened now. The phone is left overnight. Gmail app not even open and boom, the battery absolutely tanks as the phone stays awake all night. Grrr. Resetting data/cache worked last time but it clearly wasn't a permanent solution. Anyone know what I can do about this? Should I just switch to Outlook? My primary email is an outlook.com account anyway.
