My school uses VirtualBox, so I decided to get it too a while back because I thought it was Python. That was like 3 years ago.

Now I realised it's potential, and really wanted to try out Linux...

However noticed that I needed an image file with the OS - perfect! Just so happened to have a W10 x64.iso file, however, I am using my slow 5400RPM 2TB drive for this because it's large and also I don't care about it as much if it gets 'clogged up', unlike my SSD and 7200RPM 1TB HDD. So when I chose the .iso, it took me to the windows installation screen - will this actually install windows, like properly? It takes ages on the 5400RPM if this is literal. It said I only need 9GB though, which is strange (it takes like 34GB on my SSD I think).

Anyway, two questions:

1. Do I need a Linux image file to install it in virtual box?

2. Will it take me the realistic 1+ hours to install an OS on my slow HDD? (5400RPM)

Here is how to install a Linux OS into Virtualbox 5:

and yes the emulation is slightly laggy and slow, but it is barely noticeable.

VirtualBox is not emulation, https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Virtualization

But a slow hard drive will take longer to install on, so I would recommend installing it on your SSD. Not sure what you mean by 'clogged up' but that just sounds silly.

If you want to install linux, of course you will need an image, but if you are just installing windows then no.

Oh sorry, I meant HyperVisor.
