Hi so my sister's birthday is coming up and i was thinking about buying her an 8gb kit of DDR3 SODIMM memory for her laptop as an upgrade. im not really familiar with a mac but i was wondering if mac memory is specific so that you cant just buy a kit of kingston hyperx or corsair value select ram to plug into her computer. im just thinking about buying a cheap kit of memory for her laptop like maybe a single 8gb stick so then she can later on upgrade to 16gb or is 8gb her max amount of ram. her laptop is a mid 2012 macbook pro 13 non retina. and if it doesnt support 16gb then ill try to find a 2x4gb dual channel kit. hopefully ther is one for less than $50. thanks guys

2x8 should work fine :)

If it's an older Mac you should be fine with just a DDR3 SODIMM, if it's newer it's probably not upgradeable.

According to Apple, any <2013 nRMBP officially supports up to 8GB 1600mhz DDR3. Unofficially however, the Intel chipset/APU combo on these vintage MBPs allow up to 16GB 1600mhz DDR3.

You cannot use desktop grade RAM in a laptop. Desktop RAM is much longer.

I have found a great pair of 16GB (2x8GB) RAM on Newegg for about 65 dollars.
