School's Smoothwall Blocking https

mcraftax

HI Guys,

So at my school they use smoothwall. I think they block all https connections, but I am not sure as I can get onto https://bbc.co.uk/ .

The problem is that it comes up 'unsecured connection' on my phone on chrome and will not let me continue as the network stops it. The really problem is not the security not been there in http, but that if I try using http://google.co.uk/ it sends me to https://google.co.uk and I am stuck. bing.co.uk works but bing is really bad.

An idea?

Thanks

Max

Use bing? or install linux to a USB drive boot to the linux drive, and use your web browser of choice + something like tunnelbear? that's what I'm doing at my school.

Get a google account, sync this extenstion https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/unlimited-free-vpn-better/gjknjjomckknofjidppipffbpoekiipm?hl=en to it, then login into school computer, this is what I do. (smoothwall, but my school does not block https, that's weird, they don't even block YouTube)

All YT except things classed at edu are blocked to. It is completely locked down. We have to use isolated virtual machines to do coding in which have no connections to anything  too.

unsecured connection on your phone purely refers to the wireless - that's what happens when they don't have a password on wireless

as far as skirting around a block on HTTPS - no ideas. you'd probably stuck, because I bet they block all VPNs too

I never tried implementing this here is the link for it http://code.kryo.se/iodine/ it is IP over DNS if the school allows DNS queries you can theoretically bypass it with DNS queries can send and get data as queries. I seen this feature on ddrt wrt so I am assuming that you need a server to act like a proxy to decapsulate the DNS queries. Just a suggestion if you are into it.

That is a nifty idea! but an easy way to block it would be to only allow DNS to approved servers - like the internal server of the network / smoothwall - easy to do in firewall. But maybe it'll work!

Just verify if they block dns queries to your server that you will be setting up for the dns over ip. If that fails go for ICMP over IP here is the link https://github.com/DhavalKapil/icmptunnel let me know if you manage to set everything up. I was planning to set this myself but haven't gotten the time. Let me know if you manage to do it!

It happens also at my School, it's not blocking it. You require a certificate to get onto them, as my school does and requires you to login blocking external IP so VPN would not work. Talk to an Admin and they would hopefully be able to make one/ give it to you.
