Assuming that you're gonna run games along with other applications, AMD FX-6300. Have fun running GTA 5 and Chrome at the same time on an i3-6100.

Check out my guide on how to scan cover art here!

Are there other things you would recommend for gaming? It is only dual core

i5 4460 if you can afford it, the i3 should have 4 threads though since it has hyper threading.

Personally I would go for a cheaper older i5, like 4460, i3 for gaming its not enough, BUT, if you on a really tight budget I would go for i3

How much can you overclock it to?

Some people can get up to 5.0ghz, but I would say 4.5-4.7 its the average.

The A10-7850k is not a nice option, it has iGPU that you probably dont need, and has only 4 cores instead of 6 like the FX 6300.

Hyper threading  is a technology that allows a core to have 2 threads, but they are weaker than 2 threads from 2 cores.

Thnx, but why are people hating the AMD FX6300 so much?

Because it has a weak single thread performance, but with OC and since most games are using more threads now, its ok for the price, still going to weaker than any new i5(but they cost more), also other problem, its that its from an older socket, you will not be able to buy newer CPUs to upgrade, with the i3, you could buy some i5, i7 later.

Will it get 50fps on 1080p?

Sure, FX 8320 its an octo core, I personally I would go for the FX 6300, because the FX 8320 its almost at the price point of some i5.

I3-6100 is the best processor you can get for under $150 that will have consistent performance across numerous games and usage.

It is seriously an awesome budget CPU.

Gives the FX-83xx a run for it's money and has WAY better future compatibility (like, the FX has none and the i3 has a ton). Doesn't have poor single core performance like the FX, which means you can play MMO's more readily.

Okay some things have been left out here, do take note that if you are going with an FX 6300 and plan to overclock you will need a motherboard with decent VRM's (to put it simple VRM's are like a power supply with which the motherboard uses to convert current from your PSU to your CPU, you can get away with some OC up to a max of 4.4 Ghz with a motherboard that has quality 4+2 phase power design, but the recommended for an FX6300 are 6+2 power design. In the FX CPU lineup expect generally around a 4.6 Ghz OC, 5 Ghz is not guaranteed in any way. If you go with an FX83XX type of CPU and plan to overclock you will need an even more energy efficient motherboard as the recommended VRM's design for those CPU's with OC is 8+2 phases, (but again you could get away with 6+2 quality phases for a mild OC). FX's draw/use and dissipate a lot of power. Generally imho the i3-6100 seems like a better pick, while a dual core it does have hyper threading which helps in multicore games, has better core performance and a good motherboard for it is cheaper as well, then there's access to DDR4, and having a better upgrade path in front of you. That says, if you don't care at all about upgradability have the budget for a beefier mobo and have better use of multicore operations you could go with the FX, but with the mobo at that price point you might squeeze for an i5.

What motherboard would I need to overclock a i3-6100?
