Hi, name is Mike and not to long ago I purchased and really nice HP laptop with all the bells and whistles. The only negative thing it did come with was a very slow i7 processor 2.0 to be exact. I have had many computers in my life fortunately and never had a processor under 3.0, usually higher than that. my main question is. what's entailed in buying a new processor? I have also had some people suggest i get an SSD card, I don't know much about that (SSD) but with a 2.0 processor would it make much difference. Anyone who is knowledgeable about this topic. I would really appreciate your advice. I'm the type that likes his machines running fast. Thanks for any help you can offer !

What do you mean by an i7 2.0 and 3.0?  Are you talking about Ghz?  Exactly what Laptop is it?  That would help.

i5-4690k@4.5GHz || MSI GTX 970 || MSI z97 Gaming 5 || NZXT Kraken x61 || WD Black 1TB || Crucial MX100 || 8GB Corsair Vengeance Pro || Corsair RM750 || NZXT H440 || Corsair k70 RGB mx browns || Acer H236HL || ViewSonic VX2255wm-4

thats what I'm assuming he meant is Ghz,  but he was so vague its hard to tell, if he got a computer with  all the bells and whistles (not real sure what that entails). it probably has turbo boost, but some more specific information would be quite nice, especially considering HP makes a bazillion different laptops.

This could be that you purchased a "low profile" processor for your PC. Meaning it wont be overclock able and it is slow af.

if i were you if its possible return it and get your money back to buy a non low profile processor or if its outa return date then just buy a non low profile processor.

Well, first of all, clockspeed (ghz) means very little on its own. A Pentium 4 could run at 3 ghz but could get stomped by a modern intel atom at 1.4 ghz. The thing is that different cpus can run more instructions per ghz.

Second of all, laptops have slower cpus because power draw is a huge balancing act.

Third, we really need more info to help, including the model of the laptop, and preferably, the model of the i7 and graphics card (assuming it has one).

Also what are you basing the "super slow" on? Is the laptop running slow or are you basing it solely on the clockspeed?

My rig:
CPU: i5 4690k 24/7 @4.4ghz (1.165v) Max 4.7ghz (1.325v) COOLER: NZXT Kraken X61 MOBO: Asus Z97-A   RAM: 16GB Crucial Ballistix Tactical   GPU: EVGA GTX 970 SSC   PSU: EVGA GS 650W   CASE: NZXT Phantom 530 HDD: WD Caviar Blue 1TB + WD Black 2TB

.Sorry for being vague on the topic. Im not exactly an expert although I do know some. I was referring to Ghz when I mentioned 2.0 and my desktop which runs great at 3.4 Ghz. the i7 is the processor or chipset, forgive my ignorance on that. The Laptop is HP Envy m7-k11dx. Model number G6U51UA. I hope this information helps a little better. Im new to this whole forum thing.  Unrelated to my main concern is that ever since I got my free windows 10 update, when I go to power down it most of the time does not. The Screen goes off but the power button stays lit making the computer run battery and run hot. so when i shutdown now I always wait to see if the power light goes off or else I have to manual do it. Anyways. Thanks so much for your help. I'm hoping that some of the new info I provided can help a little bit. Thanks!

PS: when i checked my computer properties the processor said intel i7 2.0 Ghz but right next to it to the right it also says 2.6 GHz. im not sure what that means. sorry for any confusion

You'll never see a laptop cpu running at the same clockspeed as a desktop. It would draw too much power. 2.0 ghz is the base clockspeed, 2.6 is the turbo speed that it boosts to when it has the available power.

Again why do you think your laptop is slow? Is it only because the clockspeed (ghz) is lower? Because that is the wrong way to look at it. That's not how you determine a cpu's speed. Otherwise the fastest cpu you could buy would be the amd fx-9590 which is a lot slower than an i7-5820k.

It's a brand new laptop for the most part, but when I go to open applications are go online there's a lag to. unlike any computer I have ever owned. I wondering at this point if I go out and buy a new processor with fast processing speeds, or if an SSD card would make any difference.

PS: the 2.6 turbo speed is that something that can be turned on and left or is it an automatic on/off thing? Appreciate your help !

Looking at Amazon. It says it is a Core i7 4510U. (2.0GHz base, 3.1GHz turbo).

That is a decent CPU for most peoples needs. Even though it is a dual core.

What I did notice is that it has a 1TB HDD. Which usually means it is 5400RPM. I am guessing the lag you are getting is the hard drive. I would suggest getting an SSD or a 7200RPM HDD.

Unless you want your battery to drain in 20 mins, it's best to leave it. An ssd will help with load times, it's the most noticeable system upgrade you can do in most situations.

Lastly, most laptops do not have upgradeable cpus.
