Hello there thanks for taking the time too help! :D

I'm going to build a NAS server of a 2U size (i think thats a size) but I know very little so I need help. I have built a computer before so I have a bit of knowledge.

Where can I find the parts i need?

What parts do I need?

If I want this to be a storage server as well as a hosting server what extra do I need to do/add (such as parts)?

never built before?

it would be better for you to get a prebuilt

linus did a video yesterday about making your own nas though, so check that out

Hey thats great timing but if I don't build it now I never will have the knowledge.

starting out with something like a normal destop would be much better

much more room to work with

not as many finnicky components

things like that

Yep, get an old PC for that job. It's just file storage so it doesn't need to be uber powerful.

I have already made a PC I have that skill

a nas needs the same stuff as a pc, basically

mobo, psu, processor

problems are the cable management and heat sinks

have to be tiny

make sure that your backplane matches your controller type

aka sas or sata

and get a good nic

The case will be rack mounted and ethernet

This server will mainly be a data storage server but I would like to make this host a server.(insurgency for example)

Insurgency occasionally but mainly data storage.

i know

thats literally what i was saying

with a rack mount case the drives in the front are connected to a back plane

make sure its the right kind

a nic is needed for true correct access, cause onboard ethernet is not usually fast enough to deal with something like that

Oh ok that makes sense. Thats funny I'v always thought of ethernet as faster. But I think I would still go with ethernet I have a full house wired with CAT 6. Although if you think thats the way to go I will.

Where do I find parts for this? I keep finding full NAS server set ups not just the drives.

For what you said I think maybe something like a i3 and 8GB+ of ram

ok

a nic is a network interface card

it has ethernet ports on it

the reason you need one is because it is MUCH faster and more reliable than your onboard
