Hello all,

New member to the community here, just have a question I was hoping someone could assist me with. I have been playing with my CPU overclock attempting to find that sweet spot but have noticed my first core is around 15-20 degrees hotter then the others. The temps are the same (all within 5 degrees of each other) when back to stock settings with turbo boost turned on, so I'm just wondering if its my overclock or if I should reapply thermal paste. I have an intel i7 4790k with water cooling.

Thanks!

Some cores can run a little hotter than others but 20 degrees is excessive, something is wrong.

Are you saying that the temps are normal under stock or if the hot core is still way hotter at stock?

Your package temp is 15-20C hotter? or core 0/1/2/3 has a 15-20C leadout? A screenshot would be helpful

Temps are normal under stock settings (idle around 30ish degrees).

My stock settings bring my temps back in line, here is a screen shot of it

Is the single bad core temp tied to a certain overclock or is it a result of all overclock attempts?

Seems to be constant with all overclocks, but the strange thing is when I was overclocking last week the temps were not causing any issues.

I would check your thermal paste on the CPU.  Unfortunately if the thermal paste is evenly spread, then the problem is likely under the CPU lid and won't be fixed without de-lidding the CPU and getting an even spread on the die. :(

Might be a few things: bad thermal paste (hopefully),  bad TIM application,  faulty sensors (unlikely),  etc.

I have actually found the root cause. I had tightened the screws to tight, so I backed them off a tad. My cores are more in line now, and the temps even dropped! Maybe it allowed for more of an even spread of thermal paste that way? Or more even contact at least. My cores are more in line now, and the temps even dropped!

Thanks for all the responses
