Okay so i'm quite confused about overclocking , i get what it is turning up the core multiplier but there are some things i'm very confused about its affects on the life of my components. The main thing is that i know turning up the voltage can reduce the life but i've hear that just be increasing the clock you can shorten the life even if you don't touch the voltage is this correct or is this just misinformation. i'm just tyring to get a decent stable overclock on a 4790k and gtx 970 i can leave on and won't kill the components in the next 3 years. have a evga g2 650w psu on a msi g5 motherboard.

thank you

To put it in simple terms: Anything 1.3v and below is safe for daily use, It will shorten the lifespan of your CPU, but by the time it actually dies it will be obsolete anyway.  It took me about 45 minutes to get my stable 4.6 OC on my 4790k. Honestly, you could probably just set the multiplier to 46 (4.6 Ghz) and set Vcore as 1.26v and leave it. That's originally what I did. I messed with mine a little bit more and got mine stable at 1.235v. After you set the OC download aida64 and run it for 30 minutes. Some people run their OC's for 12 hours, but it's completely unrealistic CPU loads anyway so in my opinion you're fine with 30 minutes. Also, make sure to check the "stress GPU" box when you run the stress test. Sometimes the CPU will run fine in the test and crash in games because the person didn't test the CPU under GPU load also.

Current Build: Core i7 4790k @ 4.6, Asus Maximus VII Hero, Corsair Vengeance Pro 2400mhz 8gb (2x4gb), GTX 980ti, NZXT Kraken X61, Fractal Define R5  EVGA Supernova B2 850w, Some 300gb hard drive.

what would be a reasonable over clock on the gpu and i do leave my computer running 24/7 although not under full load

With the GPU you're going to have to fine someone else, I haven't OC'd my GPU yet. It really doesn't make a ton of difference unless you just want to do it.
