home server help?

Hi i am looking to get my self a home sever/NAS and i want to know what would be my best option.

I have been looking at something like a DELL R710 server but i am open to ideas.

this system will be in the utility closet so would be nice if could be controlled via different system

 

What i want to use the server for

 

Plex - 4K

NAS

Gaming server for LAN

also ripping and transcoding video

Are you gonna do those simultaneously? That would require quite a lot of power.

What's your budget?

no i would not do it all at the same time and i am thinking about 1000 or so i can get a R710 for like 700

An R710 with dual CPUs should do the job nicely.

Agreed. You can find them pretty damn cheap on Ebay.

I agree, R710 will suite you nicely with enough ram. I have a server with the same processor series (5520 @ 2.26ghz) and I could stream 4-5 1080p streams without issue (Plex running as a virtual windows machine on ESXI). Plex as a plugin on a NAS (FreeNAS/unRaid) should run flawlessly.
