Windows Product Key

Hey guys,

 

So I have to reinstall Windows due to corruption with internet connectivity and was wondering about the product key of my Windows copy. The product key that I have is in the box that came with a DVD of Windows 8.1. Let's say I install Windows 10 via USB stick. will the product key still work in the Windows 10 installation process? Or will it only work when installing Windows 8.1?

once W10 is activated with your MS account you will no longer need a product key for further installs, assuming it's on the same machine 

you can also use W8.1 key for the initial install

It will since the November MSX Update.

if the serial is from the 8.1 software, it'll only work with the 8.1. only way the winX can be installed if the 8.1 was upgraded to winX, then the serial is tied to both platforms. just installing winX (clean install) without the upgrade operation will yield nothing.

I only use local accounts for Windows instead of Microsoft accounts.

i have tried direct winX installs with activated COA (7/8/8.1) and they all fail, unless the activation is completed with an update.

Activate 8.1 then update to 10.

I don't know if this helps but that 8.1 key will still work on another machine so you can have 10 on one and 8.1 on the other. It is suppose to combine or disable or something but it doesn't. I have done this over 12 times and it has worked everytime. Ranging from OEM keys on the bottom or crap tops to CD keys
