As many of you may have seen, HWC recently lost a lot of data since he cut power to the system and his RAID 0 array failed. That got me thinking, are RAID 0 setups really that sensitive to power loss? How is it that ANYONE can run RAID 0 if a simple power outage can destroy the data? How did Linus even managed to survive having 8 drives in RAID 0? Thanks.

Linus has a UPS battery backup on the server. If the power went out, it would've shut the server down safely. He was also using hardware RAID with the proper on RAID card backup batteries.

Software RAID0 is definitely more sensitive to power loss, though it depends on how much data gets damaged in the process. If you run any kind of RAID (Software or Hardware), you should have some kind of power loss protection system via a UPS. Otherwise you play a dicey game with data.

Also, you should have a backup with any RAID. Running RAID0 without a proper backup is just asking for something bad to happen.

Well, the obvious rule number 1 is never store anything without having a backup, especially on a RAID 0 array.  Just assume it will fail at some point.

Next, I would say just be lucky? :)

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

I was running a RAID 0 for over 2 years, with multiple power losses, and I've never had an issue.

Interesting... were you running BIOS RAID or Windows software RAID?
