Hey guys,

i have has a server in my basement for minor developement for while. (It has VmWare esxi) But now in installing win 10 over the server for it to be my new personal rig. Since this is not in my room where my monitor, keyboard, and mouse are, what would be the best way to connect those things...? I do have 3 cat 6a cables by my computer that we can use...

I like Computer Stuffs. Have you tried unplugging it and plugging it in again? Automation Expert (Bots, scripts, etc)! Add me on Xbox Live: JollyPlanet449 And on Steam!: Baxtmann Wanshow.tips is a cool place too

I agree with @yarn go grab a Raspberry Pi 2 and use it as a thin client, that's what I do and my Windows 10 VM (that I'm typing this reply on) is a few states away.

EDIT: I'm assuming you won't be using the VM for gaming, that's basically the only thing I can't do with it.

Thin client and rdp is your best bet. Although you could use 2 of the cat6 for hdmi and 1 for usb over ethernet to you keyboard and mouse. This is not ideal but it would work.

Yea I'm thinking of doing the hdmi over cat six thing  but is there a way to get sound over another additional cat 6?

1. Patch extension cables through the wall and terminate them near your desk.

This'll be the easiest way to do it. Pretty basic approach.

Active Displayport will travel up to 33m. That should do audio and video. HDMI will also do it, but there is no maximum distance in the spec, so you will need a better quality cable if it doesn't work (and every manufacturer claims to have superior build quality, so good luck with that). I'd also throw a couple of audio jacks in there also, so you don't 'require' the Audio over the video, say 6 for 7.1 + line in.

For USB, if you can't just run an extension, you can get USB<->Ethernet adapters.

-or-

2. Use something like this: http://www.lindy.com.au/fibre-optic-kvm-extender-dvi-d-usb (they do have an ethernet version which is about 1.5k) and a single network cable.

If you are installing WinX on a VM on the ESXi host, then directly connecting a monitor/keyboard/mouse will do NOTHING for you (you'll simply have a terminal for the ESXi host)

You will need to RDP into this virtual machine running WinX

NOW, if you are uninstalling ESXi and running WinX natively, then extensions for these peripherals would work, however the latency would very likely become an issue...

ESXi SysAdmin

I have more cores/threads than you...and I use them all
