I connected my Desktop and Laptop on the router using CAT5E LAN Cable on both of them. I wanted to transfer big data so I need them to be fast.

Now when I got them working its speed is just around 5MB/s. Why is it like that? It's like transferring to a USB 3.0 flash drive will be faster. Please help.

What speeds are the ports on the router? The laptop and desktop?

Yea it says 100.0 Mbps on both Desktop and Laptop. But why is the transfer rate just 5 MB/s? It even goes down to 3 MB/s:(

Hello again! xD

So we have established that something in your network is 10/100Mbps (not 1Gb capable).... Now to the question of transfer speeds. Are you transferring one large file (like a movie) or lots of small individual files? -  If the answer is lots of small files then the speed you are getting is normal because if you think about it. You spinning disk head has to fly around checking the partition table (table that is like an index of a book) and then moving again reading that small section of data and then again back to the partition table. Now add to that mix fragmentation on parts of the small files and you will start to loose speed due to the read head having to do all this extra work.

The general rule of thumb is the smaller the files the larger the overhead, the larger the files the smaller the overhead.

Quack 🦆

There are small and big files. But right now it's just 1 big file being transferred because I can see that the file name doesnt change. Coz if it's transferring the small files it'll be changing right? It seems my 32GB USB 3.0 is faster. Im so disappointed. Problem is with USB I have to transfer it 2x. :(
