Hello,

It started in december, random hangs occured while using my pc, they can happen when I watch people streaming, when im playing a game or when i do both at the same time. The hangs happens at random time and sometimes i dont have any for few days, other times i can have 3 during the same day.

I dont get any BSOD, both of my monitors just froze, no more sound, cant move my mouse, both my mouse and my keyboard lights are off. All my drivers are up to date, my windows is up to date. I dont understand what is causing the problem, I have no DMP files because i have no BSOD and my event log only shows kernel power in critical error, which I understand since I had to hard restart the pc using the power button after the pc just froze.

With a friend I already scan my pc for virus/malware,checked if my windows had corrupted/broken files, updated all my current drivers and resocketed my ram.

I had one BSOD "clock_watchdog_timeout" my cpu was overclocked using Linus video, so I tried to remove the overclock and put the default clock and voltage, 2 hours after I had another freeze.

I'm using msi afterburner to monitor the temp and the use of my gpu, cpu and the usage of my RAM, even when the pc freeze the numbers are fine. My only concern is i have 2x8GB ddr4 RAM windows sees 16GB but msi afterburner show me a maximum of 8192, dont know if its only a display or if the program tells me that onlt 8GB can be use.

Build:

Windows 10 Pro 64bit
Asus Z170 Pro Gaming (BIOS 1105 lastest )
i7-6700k (previously overlocked to 4.5, back to stock settings)
Asus gtx 970
Corsair 2x8GB 2400Mhz
Corsair AX860I 860W
Corsair H100i
Samsung 850 EVO Series 250GB
Seagate Barracuda 3TB 7200RPM SATA3 64MB

P.S. I built the pc myself back in september, i had no freeze or BSOD before december.

I'm not getting freezes on my rig but I noticed laggs allover the OS when I had a lot of stuff running but neither my RAM nor my CPU were anywhere near max usage or heating up. Maybe it's the skylake processors causing this. I have the same motherboard and i5 6500.

Memtest was an aweful 4hours for a negative result, video driver is up to date. I'm downloading samsung magician right now to test, but i dont have any extra PSU to test. So i should try to use the first and the third ram slot on my motherboard? Is that what you meant by " if your ram sticks on 2/4 DIMM put them into 1/3" ?

With what program should i do the torture test and for how long?

I typically would say use Prime95 to stress test your PC; however, seeing how you have a Skylake Processor, that might be a problem because there is a known issue that Skylake Processors tend to lock up when making large floating point calculations. You can try using the ROG (Republic of Gamers) stress testing software. Click here

I'm not 100% sure but you might also run into problems as this stress test suite might also be dealing with floating point calculations.

Ran the stress test for few hours on the cpu, no issue, no problem, everything was fine. But no option for a gpu stress test.

According to this thread: https://communities.intel.com/thread/96157?start=0&tstart=0

some freeze were cause by the cpu architecture, 3 days ago i updated my bios with last version, the one with microcodes changes, still waiting to get another freeze, hope that wont happen and that my problem is solved.

Edit : Just to be sure i tried to run Intel system support utility (SSU) can't open it because they say im not an administrator. Then i tried to run the Intel processor diagnostic tool, the test failed at cpu frequency.

Module - CPUFreq.exe did not create a results file.

Still no freezes since the 6th, but i still don't know if its because i remove the overclock or because of the microcodes changes from the bios update. I'm gonna wait a few more days and i will try to overclock again, little by little.

Still cant run IPDT test pass the cpu frequency don't know why and cant launch intel SSU because the program doesnt recognize me as an administrator.

And there we go again, while playing CSGO my pc froze, my pheripherals lights are off. My CPU is still stock, didnt try to overclock after downgrade it.

Here's a printscreen of my msi afterburner, extreme right is the moment of the crash, for me nothing abnormal.
