I have a large file from my laptop and I want to transfer it to my desktop.

So I connected both of them on the router using a LAN Cable. I have file sharing set to ON with the laptop.

I also selected Drive C and Drive D. On their properties I changed both to shared.

Problem is that on my desktop when I try to access my laptop, I cant open any drive. I can access the Public Folders but I cant access the Drives.

Where did I go wrong? Thanks!

Are you getting a permission error or a "not found" error? Can you ping the laptop from the desktop and vise-versa? Are the in the same WORKGROUP?

They are on same workgroup. Basically they are already communicating. If I open warcraft on my PC and laptop, they can play together with LAN.

Here's what I get when I try to access C: or D:

In the above image by @Samppa221. Have you went into the Permissions button and set the everyone group to "full control" ? (this is far from best practice but it will work as long as you turn it off after you are done).

Yes it's set to full control? Why is there a security risk if I leave it like that? Sorry kinda newbie.

It would mean if I got connected to your network, I could type in your IP and get access to all your C: drive. because "Everyone" is allowed access.

Ok so lets start from the beginning,

you have you files in a folder you want to transfer, you have right click'd (that folder) > properties > sharing tab > advanced sharing > tick the "share this folder" > click on Permissions > ticked the "Allow for Everyone"... If you have done all that you should be able to pop the IP address of your computer with the files onto the computer you wish to transfer (\\XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX).

Whops! we missed a step. Do the same thing but on the other computer you wish to transfer to... You need a source and destination "place" to put your files in and both places must have permissions to allow it.

You mean I should also allow everyone to get full control my desktop too? I dont think that's necessary since I will just copy file from the laptop. Meaning my desktop will enter the laptop not the other way around. Or is it really necessary?

Like I said above, you will need to create a public share that allows access to write data from one drive to another. Yes it is required but after you have finished there is nothing stopping you deleting both shares (and so with it, the everybody permission) and you will be back to being secure again.
