Some of you will remember that i posted a thread about getting help on a budget builds for my friend.

The build included an 860k and a gtx 750ti but i was able to find a fews good deals online on used GPUs.

1 MSI R9 280X Gaming, 1 Asus R9 280X DC2 and 1 Asus GTX 760 DC2 (All of them cheaper than a new 750ti).

Now the R9 280X is obviously more powerful but in my understanding the Nvidia drivers are more forgiving on a weak CPU.

So which one should i pick?

280X, maybe a 290 if you can find one very cheap if your PSU can handle it, not sure about the bottleneck, will be very slight tho.

It's weaker than a G4400 in most games.

I'd get the Asus 280x. MSI 280x had problems with throttling VRMs and I'm not sure if it's fixed in the most recent batches.

Original Asus 280X had overvolted VRAM ._.

Tough call. The R9 280X is better than the GTX 760 but in CPU hungry games the GTX 760 may perform better with an 860K. If it aids your decision, I had an Asus GTX 760 DCII and it was noisy as hell for a midrange card (my GTX 980 Ti is quieter)... did not have a pleasant time with the Asus GTX 760, though performance-wise it was fine.

Go with a 280X but make sure you test them before buying. Some R9 280X's had artifacting issues and the Asus model seemed to be worse than others actually scratch that by looking at the MSI 280X reviews it looks just as bad. Run the cards with Unigine valley for at least 3 runs to get temps up and inspect for artifacting. the 280x is on par with a 770 so only get the 760 if it's cheaper than the 280x's.

It's easier to flash the bios, than to replace the thermal compound or the entire cooler because of MSI's sloppy job:
