Help please. Lately my brother's pc has been dying and I'm planning on getting him a new pc. Although the budget isn't very large a PC with an i7 and at least a GTX 970 or better. I know this isn't really needed but that would be better. I already have a case and peripherals so all I need is the PC with wifi. Once again I know that I don't need a i7 OR a GTX 970 but anyone who helps please just try to make it work. Thanks!

Obviously I don't know if the case supports the cooler, but the 390 is a notably better gpu than the 970.

BUT BUT BUT NIVIDIA!!!!! Lol JK. Maybe add an HDD? Also look around and maybe get a 4770k for cheaper. They are basically the same.

Yea don't buy a 4770k. Ever.

I made the assumption he already had an HDD, but obviously there is room to spare.

What is wrong with the 4770k? Over clock it to 4.5 and they are really close to identical.

It runs insanely hotter due to arguably the worst TIM intel has ever used, it uses a significantly lower quality FIVR that limits overclocking (and sometimes even stock stability), and finally even if your Vccin doesn't become an issue, Haswell on the 4770k is just straight up worse top end in every way compare to the 4790k (which is to be expected as a node matures, just like second gen Hawaii or the 7970 etc).

If you want to try to find a good deal on a used cpu cool, but get a 4790k instead.

if you dont need to render or video edit you wont benefit from the I7

better go with an i5 then like i5 4690k instead of the devils canyon they're like 99% same in most game performance AFAIK

or the xeon 1231v3 ( similar to devils canyon without integrated graphics ) and cheap

and the 970 is nice but even as a member of team green i 'd say get an team red card for better performance for the money

read the signature link ;) bob jim did a nice lineup nvidia vs amd cards for different budgets

There are notable differences in recent games even with hardware as low as a 380/960. This difference will only increase over time as games become more and more multithreaded.

If the difference between the i5 and i7 is the difference between a large jump in gpu, then obviously go for the gpu, but as the budget given fits both cpu and gpu easily, it makes a great deal of sense to go for the i7 imho.

Why not go for the Intel Xeon E3-1231v3, that's like the same as the 4770k, but without the iGPU ain't it? And it's alot cheaper at that.

Because there is lots of extra budget anyways... And you never notice how much you miss onboard video until you don't have it.

Never been in that position that I've needed it tbh :P
But I see your point, but I wouldn't know if let's say 150 USD extra is worth it :P

Diagnosing a non-post on a motherboard without post codes is another level of annoying without an igpu.

Assuming you don't live in an area where you can get it for 300 USD or less (while it's up to 299 atm at microcenter, not even two months ago they were selling there for 249.99)
